I saw a sign outside a local cafe today that said, "Try our Yankee Gammon!" with a chalk drawing of an American flag. What's Yankee gammon?!? Does anyone know? I don't eat pork, but I'm still very curious.

Ok, here's what you want to do. Go to your local butchers or farmers market with butchers (they usually give free cooked samples), and ask about their sausages. You'll find a sausage that is more meat, less bread-filler, more flavor than what you'd get from the pre-packaged usual dross on the grocery store shelves. Barring that, check out the gourmet-looking sausages on the shelf (they vary from region to region) and try what looks good. M&S usually have a good meat selection, better than your average store, too.

As for the gammon in the shops, you'll want to get the big gammon steaks and put those on your grill - OMG those are so good. If you like ham & eggs, those are the hams to get. ASDA does an 'extra special' version of them and they are delicious.

Oh and don't forget Lidl - they have bratwurst!! And other European meats that are tasty.

i dont like back bacon cos i prefer the streaks of fat in streaky.  But it's best to just stick it under the grill.  And even if you're buying back bacon, try to get dry-cured.   

And you were asking about breakfast sausage?!   What's wrong with the world famous Lorne (or 'skwerr') sausage?!  Available everywhere in Scotland!  :)

Lorne sausage is one of the best things going.  I LOVE it.  Square sausage any day of the week and I am happy.

No idea? I never heard of the word gammon before I moved here.

As for bacon, yes....streaky, dye cured is the best!

I had never heard of Gammon before I moved the UK either I had to ask Dh what it was. Dh & I went out for a nice meal a few months back & I had Gammon. I called my mom a few days later an told her about our evening out I told I had Gammon for dinner. she asked me what that was I told her it was a fancy name for ham lol. my mom is 66 so maybe it is a Midwestern thing that we didn't know what Gammon was.

I am from the east coast so its not just the mid westerners. Kind of like "rocket", I didn't know what that was when I first started going to restaurants over here.

gammon, mange tout and rocket, i have no clue. well, i know that gammon is ham but i dont know why its called gammon. mange tout just sounds terrible no matter what it is.

I hadn't heard gammon either before coming over here.  I still just call it all ham.

I had no idea what rocket was for the longest time -- thought it was just a name the British gave to a weed 'cos that's what it looks like.  (Reminds me of dandelion greens.)  I forget what the Americans call it, but we do have it there -- I'm not a fan so I never bothered with it, usually find it kind of bitter.  DH is growing some in a pot & his homegrown rocket isn't too bad.

Mange tout - French term the British borrowed (just like courgette & aubergine).  I'm forever a bit confused over gammon as well -- is it a term only for ham that's not been cooked?  Or just for any kind of ham?  Or what?

i seem to remember Nigella saying that gammon is uncooked ham... it only becomes ham when it's cooked.
