Anyone ever had eggs with green shells?  I can't remember which variety of chicken lays them (anyone?),

Arcanas?  ;D

NCNY is right. You're not supposed to wash eggs until you are ready to use them. They have a natural coating that helps to keep bacteria from permeating the shell.

I've always found it weird too that eggs aren't refrigerated here, since that's just what I'm used to.  I refrigerate mine out of habit, but not sure now after what Mindy posted!

My neighbor gives me eggs from his free range chickens (we deserve it b/c the d*mn cockeral wakes us up every morning) - they sometimes have poop on them or a bit of feather, but I never wash them. i have noticed they are smaller and have thicker shells than the eggs I used to buy. DH still buys eggs b/c he likes bigger eggs  ::) I love haivng a neighbor that gives us eggs, great for poached egg on toast, yumm!!

Well, we can't sell any eggs with dirt/poop/dead chicken residue on them as Grade A in Canada, and now that is being extended to B and C.  They (soon) can only be used as animal feed if they're unwashed.

Interesting because back in the states, I never knew what Grade A meant? I had never seen anything other than that over there...now I get it.

Like Andrea said, I never knew different about chilling eggs and I still do it over here as soon as I buy them.

I always refrigerate mine, but thanks to Mindy I will be conscious of where I actually place them in the fridge! I've been told you shouldn't put eggs in that special holder on the door because the opening and closing of the door allows them to warm up and cool down which isn't good. Is this for real?

As for feathers, I have to admit it completely freaked me out when I opened a carton to check for cracks and there was a huge feather on the egg.

This thread is totally intriguing...

That and also the eggs can absorb any odors that are in the fridge if they're out of the carton they come in.

What if they're in a holder inside the fridge, on the top shelf, on the left side, not touching anything?

I know that you shouldn't wash eggs you plan to hatch, but didn't know the difference between washed and unwashed for eating. I haven't understood why they aren't refrigerated in the UK.

We have cage-free eggs here and they're still cleaned and refrigerated.

I'd probably put them in the middle in a container away from any cooked food  and wash you're hands afterwards. :)

You've probably had a few funny tummies that you didn't realize were from  eggs.

I doubt it.

We got only brown eggs in R.I., the state bird, the R.I. Red lays brown eggs.  They "imported" eggs for Easter.
