That's cool, I had no idea they had enough Rhodies to supply the whole State!  Those are nice birds.  I've only seen them in hobby farms in BC.

Off-topic egg news... if you have relatives in  Northwest BC, eggs are going to be in short supply in the next few weeks/months.  Between the highway going out and flooding, bird shipments can't get through.  Our farm is 10,000 short now.  Worried about the water plant... can't wash the eggs if the water gets contaminated.  The birds shouldn't be drinking dirty water, either.

It's worth mentioning that UK eggs stamped with the lion emblem are from chickens vaccinated against salmonella.

We got only brown eggs in R.I., the state bird, the R.I. Red lays brown eggs.  They "imported" eggs for Easter.

Yes! Do you remember the commercial: "Brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh"? I'll have that stuck in my head all night now!

Did you also know that the Rhode Island Red is classed as a rare breed? Most of the brown egg laying chickens in the US are a sort of spin-off of the purebred Red. The pure Rhode Island Red isn't that common anymore ... we even had a few of them at the zoo in Providence when I worked there!

that's an interesting observation about the UK... eggs can have poo and feathers on the shell but you are hard pressed to find a dirty potato in the average supermarket.  ;)

I just crack it pooey feathers and all yet still, out of habit, I wash the clean potatoes. hmmm...

I was a docent and worked there every weekend. Yes, the Halloween pumpkins were amazing, weren't they?!

Oh, well.  I'm sure you know better than me.

I would say that I (and of course my mum and grandmother) would know better than you about what has given me illnesses in the past, yes.

I haven't had stomach problems since a grumbling appendix in about 1986.  I think I can be sure that I haven't been poisoned due to not cleaning eggs before I make an omlette.

I do know that most cases of salmonella now come from the outside of the egg.  When you crack it the bacteria enters into the egg.  Of course, most normal healthy adults aren't affected by it anyway.

To chill or not to chill?

I rinse my eggs and they stay in the cupboard. Buy only enough for the week.

I also tend to rinse the milk cartons, tins (cans), juice bottles, fruit, etc. One never knows what dirty little vermin have been crawling over them in the warehouses, factories, etc. and one can't exactly see dried rat pee.

I think food hygeine should be mandatory in school.
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

That's a lot of rinsing!! I use the "as and when" method of wiping and rinsing because suppose I have my own little vermin crawling around!! ew  ;)

Yes , it is a lot of rinsing. I like the 'get it done and over with' method. Tend not to be any critters in this house, they either get et, shot or taken out for a walk.  ;)

No, no, no! Haven't you been reading the other egg thread? Turns out we're not supposed to be eating them at all!  :P ;)
