"What the World Eats"
« on: June 07, 2007, 09:10:02 PM »
Here is a photo essay from the Time website showing a week's shopping for 15 different families around the world.  Pretty interesting - I might try to find the book.  If you have your browser sized right, it's fun to try to guess the country just based on the food - the labels are below the photos.

I just thought it was nice to see one family with wine and beer!

(There may have been others, but I couldn't go back to check because my computer is moving like molasses today.)

The thing that struck me the most was that the average American family had so little in the way of fruit and veg!! The British family wasn't much better, but it was just slightly. It looked as if all the Americans had were two tomatoes and a bunch of grapes! Embarrassing!!

Or what about the insane (in a yummy, good way) amount of bread the Italian family had?  Mmm... bread.

The family in the refugee camp sort of puts some perspective on my groaning at the weeks grocery bill.

Dude, I know!  It really gives a new meaning to Coke addict....  ;D

And I got a kick out of the box of Go Cat that the British family had (though I didn't spot the kitty!).

I think I want to go live with the Italian family!  Their spread looked awesome.  The family from Chad broke my heart....

That was interesting. I was looking too at how much more some families had than others even when they were close in family size. I just wish they had used the same number of people in each family to show the comparisons. The pet food made me giggle and all the sweets the British family had shocked me but the Americans with all the fast food and junk was just bad. The California family did much better at least.  :P

I was thinking the same thing about family size too. When I was about halfway through I was trying to recall which families were larger/smaller and had more food/less food than others. It would have been nice to see something on each page to compare it with maybe, though I don't know how you'd do that.

Struck me the best place to be was in a non Anglo-Saxon country!  Apart from the Chad photo which was heart-breaking, the richer the country, the worse the food I thought!

The whole thing is making me nosey.  I want to know what UKY eats!  Anyone up for a game of "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" this week?

I remember thinking, "how many bell peppers can one family eat in a week?!"  ;D

Oooh, that would be fantastic!  I'm not sure that we could do it, though - we rarely do a weekly shop, as our fridge/pantry space is quite limited....
