wine
« on: June 08, 2007, 10:41:52 AM »
dh & i went down to london last weekend to see "spamalot". we popped into a little italian joint for lunch & had an incredible glass of wine, muscato d'asti. it was fizzy like an asti, but it had the honeyed sweetness of a mead. it was sublime. and now i'm desperate to find it.

anyone else have new favourites?

No new favorites, but I am beginning to venture into non-california chardonnays.  I had always hated the overly oaky flavour of chards, but some of the south african and south american ones are actuall quite nice.

Yay! Another convert to the un-oaked Chardonnay!!!  ;D I don't drink much white, but that's what I drink when I do!!!

I'm a big, bold red person. My current fav, though very hard to find, is Primitivo which is an Italian grape that is genetically identical to Zinfandel. Only grown in Italy. Mmmmmmmmm.

Muscato is also available as a still wine. In the US you can get a Muscat made by Bonny Doon that is really, really good but really, really sweet - I can only drink it in tiny quantities as a desert. I've seen something very similar here in Oddbins.

Muscato (fizzy) makes a damn fine Bucks Fizz!

I'm not much of a wine lover, but the German bier shop near me sells this stuff called Viking Blood which is a cherry & honey wine, and is lovely!   They also do a normal honey wine.  These are both quite sweet, but that's really the only kind of wine i truly enjoy.   :)

We've ordered it (2x) from here:

Oooh, that sounds lovely!  I'm a sweet wine person, too - I mostly just stick to honey wine (especially with Ethiopian food) and the occasional dessert wine.

Oooh, thanks! That's a good price too. The only one our local offie (offy?) carries is really expensive so I rarely buy it!

My new love is a red wine from South Africa called pinotage.  It's a sweeter red wine, but not overly so.  Very lovely!!

My new favorite is Sovini Cabernet... or the Merlot.  Both good, and on sale for 2.5 pounds/bottle.  If you see it, give it a try!

I like Pino Grigio. I'm not a fan of red wines.

Moscato D'Asti is my favorite!  While living in Italy, I got spoiled when it came to wine and food.  I love the Moscato and I brough a few bottles with me when I moved.  We have one every now and then.  I have a pretty big wine collection that I don't know what I'm gonna do with in a couple of months when we move back to the US!

This just reminded me that we have a bottle of Muscat AND Framboise down in the basement.  Thanks, Anne! :D

The last few years I've been on a big red kick, but recently I've found a local white that I'm loving.  It's a bit on the light and fruity side, which is usually not something I like, but for some reason I can't get enough of this stuff.  Hmm... I may have to have some tonight!

You can do SO much with that BD Framboise. It's beyond yummy.
