Easy Tofu Recipes
« on: June 09, 2007, 07:03:12 PM »
Hi everyone!

My teenage daughter wants to try tofu and although I've had it a few times, someone else has always made it.  Does anyone on here have any good and easy tofu recipes that are teenage friendly and aren't too spicy?

Thanks guys!!!  [smiley=daisy.gif]

If being meat-like will make it better, freeze it.  Then thaw it out and squeeze out the water (I put a weight on it).  You can then shred it or toss it in stir-fries or chili, or w.h.y.

If the texture isn't an issue, just put in stir fries as is.  Or on shish kebabs.  Or grill a bit, marinade and put in salads.  Firm tofu works best for those.

The flavoured tofu may work well, too.  You can find it with herbs and pepper.  Nice on its own!  I ate a block of smoked herbed tofu a few weeks ago on crackers.  I had planned to put it in salad, but ate it all...

You can always chop it up and cook it with some stir-fry sauce.  Mix in some veggies, and serve over rice.  A bit of soy sauce is optional.  My vegetarian teen will eat tofu like this, and you can buy it already cubed.

Ok my son is only a toddler not a teenager, but he likes the silken style tofu (that's the long life kind that comes in a little cardboard box) crumbled and stirfried with noodles, beansprouts, garlic and soy sauce, kind of like a chow mein.

Otherwise, yes I recommend the kind of things Madeira is suggested. For myself, I like to slice it & marinade it for a few hours in soy sauce lemon juice garlic and chilis, then grill it. You could leave out the chilis though, or try something else in the marinade. Hoi Sin sauce makes a good marinade for tofu as well.

I usually get the extra firm and just cut it into 1 inch cubes and stir fry it in soy sauce until just crispy.  I'll then add it to something like stir fried veggie, or for breakfst scrambled eggs.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.  They sound so good and easy enough for me to handle.   :)

Press the liquid out of firm tofu by placing between two plates and weighting the top plate. Let it press for half an hour. Then season it as you like (vegan bouillon powder, soy sauce, liquid smoke, a dry rub for barbecue, tandoori seasoning, whatever you want), cut it in slabs or cubes, toss it in a little oil and either pan fry it or put it in a roasting pan and bake until golden. You can add it to stir-fried vegetables or however seems appropriate according to how you've seasoned it. That's the main way I cook it!

Another good one is scrambled tofu. Will post recipe later!

I think it's great your daughter wants to try tofu!  I eat it 4-5 times per week and always love trying new stuff.  One of my favorites is scrambled tofu for brekkie and marinated baked tofu.  Great as leftovers for salads.

Here is a great link loaded with recipes.  Also off to the right side it tells you how to press tofu and the difference between firm, soft and silken.   :)

Thanks for the info and link, jennredd and everyone else.  There's a lot of really good sounding recipes on there.  I think I'll try one tonight.

I get the silken style from Tesco or Co-Op.  If you have an Asian grocer near you that would be your best bet.

http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/  Lots of tofu products.  I order other stuff from them, great customer service and quick shipping!  I get most of my tofu at Fresh & Wild or Sainsburys too.
