Hello to Everyone
« on: March 06, 2004, 10:07:24 PM »
Hi everyone, this is my first post here, since I just joined.  I'm from Minnesota, I love it here, the weather is awesome!!  At times that is.  But for the past year or so I've been thinking about moving to the UK.  I do not know anyone over there, and would like to have an experience of my lifetime, I think that living in a different country would be an amazing experience.  I'm just wondering about some people's veiw of moving to the UK from the US and things along those lines.  Sorry if this is to long, just wanted to say a few things.  Well take care everyone, hope you have wonderful days.

Hi and Welcome!

Not too long...if it is too short of a post we complain we don't know enough about you! I have not yet made the move to the UK just am in the paperwork/planning stage..so can't be of much help except to say I am looking forward to the move (understatement of the year).

There are many here that can give you first hand views though!

Hi Ringo...welcome to UKY!  :)

As others have said, there is lots of info here so just keep reading and you'll soon know more than you ever thought there was to know.  Moving to the UK can be a long, hard process.....and then once you get here the *really* hard stuff starts!

But we're glad to have you here and hope to see you around the boards!  :)

The best advice I can give - ask a lot of questions!  There are so many little things that we from the US take for granted that are just different over here.   The more aware you are of the differences, the better prepared you will be.

For example, the first time I went to a pub, I put my £20 note out on the bar and just left it there, until somebody noticing I wasn't from around here said you just don't do that - your money will be stolen in the blink of any eye.  It's not as bad as it sounds, I guess it's just an example of a different rule of life to live by.

Why would you put your money out on the bar and leave it there?  Maybe i have been in the UK too long, but i dont remember doing that in California!  What's the reason behind it?

My Dad does this, but he's from the smallest of small towns in Pennsylvania.  I think it's so you don't have to keep digging in your pocket everytime you pay for a drink.   :)

Same here, but I'd never do it with any more than $10 or so.

It's really not such an unusual thing to do amongst patrons sitting or standing at the bar when running a tab is'nt an option (like most pubs) and even then I see it when people crack a tenner or a twenty and are gonna sit there for a few. The only time it's really a problem is when that patron goes to the loo or someone walks up to the bar, orders a drink then slides the money in his direction and pays for his drink with that money or pockets it altogether on the way out. Barternders with regulars learn the habits of their patrons, in British pubs where tipping is basically non-existant they could care less, thats my experience with it anyway 8)
