Can chipping and vaccination happen in the same visit?
« on: June 13, 2007, 04:50:34 PM »
For convenience sake, I'm hoping it can.  But if thedates need to be one after the other to prove the chipping was done first then I guess we'll have to deal with that.

Yes, but vaccination and blood draw can not.

You can do them both at the same time.  The rabies titre (blood draw) is what needs to be performed 21 days later.

Doesn't need to be preformed 21 days later.  You just need to prove that the blood draw occurred after the vaccination, which occurred after the chipping.  The 21 days thing is the minimum recommended time for the antibody levels in a previously unvaccinated animal to reach the levels required to pass the rabies titre test.  So, if your pet is all up to date already on its rabies vaccines you shouldn't have a problem with antibody levels.

Got it!  Our cats are up to date, so I'm sure they will be fine, but I'm getting concerned on the timeframe!!  So, if I can combine trips that is better for me!  One other question for the actual shipping of the cats, who sets the guidelines on how big the kennel has to be??  We live in Iowa and hope to get a flight directly out of here, but that would require a stopover which makes me nervous since they are going to be shipped unaccompanied before we leave.  So if anyone has any info on how to ship them ahead of time and knows about the requirements or where to find them, that would be awesome!  Thanks everyone!

The microchipping must be done before the vaccination (even if its the same day) as the vaccination certificate must have the microchip number on it.

Yael's right - make sure the vet notes the time at which each procedure occurred, as well, so that when it comes to filling out the third-country health certificate it'll be clear that the chipping happened first (mine say something like "chipping - 10 March 05 - 2:00pm" then "vaccination - 10 March 05 - 2:10pm" for one cat and 2:20 and 2:30 for the other).

My cats just had their yearly rabies vaccine a few weeks ago, so they'll unfortunately have to be vaccinated again at their PETS appointment this Friday when they get microchipped.  Since I know the titre will come back okay, is it acceptable to have the blood draw done the same day as well?  I didn't see anything in the official documentation that says you can't do this.

That's absolutely fine.  We were thinking of doing the same thing, as our boys had had their shots two months prior, but since they were six months old when they had their first shots and therefore hadn't had a series of booster shots as kittens, the vet advised us to wait the full 21 days just to make sure.

Thanks Meg!  I'll call the vet and arrange for the blood test to be done tomorrow as well.  The fewer car trips for my girls, the better.  :)

No problem!  I know exactly what you mean - our vet was literally just down the street from us (maybe a mile away?  About three minutes by car) and you would have thought I was torturing the cats from the amount of screaming that came from the back seat every. single. time.  ;D

Just got back from our first PETS visit... Bubble and Squeak got microchipped and their rabies shots done up again.  The vet wouldn't do the blood draw at the same time even though she knew it would come back okay, because she wanted to make absolutely sure there wouldn't be any holdups due to the blood draw being done on the same day.  She's looking out for us and we appreciate that.

The poor kitties were a bit traumatized, but they're fine now.  I'm glad the ball is finally rolling.
