Getting a Marriage License in the US
« on: June 20, 2007, 07:33:47 PM »
Hey guys, rather easy topic, mostly to put minds at ease yet again. I've looked it up online, on here, and have called the courthouse, but I guess this is a quadruple check. We don't need anything special to get the marriage license just because he's from the UK, right? I called and was told that all we need is government ID, and the SS# part wouldn't matter for him--so I'd bring in my passport and SS#, and he'd just bring his passport. This is correct, right? The pastor keeps voicing how wary he is of doing it wrong. Did anyone have to do or get anything special? (We're getting married in Ohio and living in the UK...the visa is a whole other ballgame). TIA!

Depends on your state.  It think when we got married we both needed two picture id's and I need my s.s. card.  That was for PA.

I've been worried about this too! I've heard that a passport is all we need, or a passport and birth certificate (I'm in Maine).

Here are some links I looked at (besides emailing my town clerk)

http://london.usembassy.gov/scotland/faqs.html

http://usmarriagelaws.com/

http://www.netherlands-embassy.org/article.asp?articleref=AR00000172EN (it isn't for the UK, but it makes sense and is more helpful than the US one)

I think bring his passport and (if you're feeling nervous) his birth certificate just in case.

It definitely depends on what state.  For what it's worth, we got married in NYC and we only needed our passports.  We had both birth certificates and my SS card to be on the safe side but they never even asked for them.  They just briefly glanced at the passports.

We got married in Minnesota and all we needed for my husband was to show his passport which he really didn't bother too much with.  Just a bit of paperwork and 5 minutes later we were married.  Very easy  :)

We got married in Illinois (Lake County to be exact) and only needed our passports.  They did ask me for my SS#, but not for proof of it (as far as I remember - it was almost 2 years ago!).

It really varies by State (and sometimes by counties in a state!), so I'd just call your county clerk and ask.  Probably the best way to put your mind at ease! :)

We just did Las Vegas and it was easy!!  His passport and my drivers license was all that they needed!
