Costco in the UK.......
« on: March 08, 2004, 08:28:26 PM »
Don't laugh, but what kind of products do they carry?  Only UK goods?  Any american brands?

I'm a member here in the US, i put DF on my card so he uses in the UK, but i never thought to ask what good they carry!

Just curious.  :)

hmmm...seems odd that you have to be one of the following professionals:

Current or retired employee of:

Banking/Finance
Civil Servant
Education
Fire/Rescue
Local Government
Medical/Health Service
Police Force
Post Office

Qualified as:

Optician
Dentist
Pharmacist
Solicitor/ Barrister/ Magistrate/ Advocate

I guess i wouldn't be able to get a membership anyway, as I cant imagine myself lugging bulk products home on public transport.

oh well. :-/

REALLY? that's strange.  we just have to pay 45 bucks for an annual membership. i was happy i could add him on as a UK resident and we could use.

He took him mom and she was overwhelmed.  I don't think we'll be buying much in bulk over there though!

It said on the UK site that a membership cost 25 pounds and you must show proof of the above employment - like a paystub or work id :(

But that is a good method - get membership in US and add UK spouse!

I was in Costco on Saturday, but i dont actively seek out American products, so i might have missed quite alot of stuff (i go in with a list of what i want, and dont really look at anything else..), but i remember seeing some big jars of Pace Picante sauce, They have large jars of Skippy, and huge pizzas that are really good (i did buy one of those!) and an Old El Paso variety pack, which included a taco kit, fajita kit and a burrito kit.

Oh , and i definitely saw Krispy saltine crackers.

wow, i had no clue that you had to work in one of those certain fields to be a member! :-/  (that's pretty lame how they are so discriminitive with their memberships, i think...  :( )
there is another way, like how you get a "secondary membership" at Sam's Club in the U.S....  under someone else's membership.

i think that if you know someone with a membership, that you can go in there with them and get your own card under theirs...

After just having made my first trip to Costco here; I can tell you it is IDENTICAL to home... the only exceptions being some of the brands of course.  But the layout, the selection, etc. is the same.  I almost forgot what country I was in!  And of course, ended up having to put back a few 'bulk' items, as I now have nowhere to store them...
But, as you may know, Costco has their own brand, Kirkland, which is available at all the stores, and I find a very good one, from trainers/sneakers to food items.
I would highly recommend a membership if you're able to go even just three or four times a year; I think; I spent a bundle, but, adding it up to what it would have cost as I bought it in smaller amounts elsewhere, I saved a load!  And, of course, you do need to know someone with a car...

Costco also carries Krusteaz pancake mix and frozen waffles, as well as sourdough bread mix.  They also have Oreo cookies, american hot dogs (all beef in the refrigerated section - not the ones in the tins!), megasize boxes of Reese's PB cups.

Broxi, those pizzas are fantastic, but how do you get them in your oven?  They won't fit in my little UK oven!
I'm sorry.  I'm just not cool.

My oven is normal-sized (60cm wide) and the pizzas fit just fine!   Maybe you could try cutting yours in half before baking it!

I agree that their membership policy is a bit sucky, but not that long ago it was the policy of all those warehouse clubs (yes, even in the US).  My parents have been members of both the Pace one and Sam's Club.  They haven't been members of Pace in a long time, but they have continued to be members of Sam's Club for the last oh say 12 years or so.  I LOVE Sam's Club and will miss it ever so dearly :'(!!!!!!  They just torn down the old Sam's Club by us and built a brand spanking new one which is out of this world...I love it.  Plus they have really nice (name brand clothes there), I even bought the sweater I wore on the night we got engaged from there....lol.

But I do remember my parents only got to be members initially because my dad is a minister and my mom is a teacher (both qualified for the membership).

Anyone know if they have plans to bring Sam's Club over to the UK?  We don't really get Costco in the Midwest, so I'm not that familiar with it.  I will be a teacher, but probably won't get employed as one initially, so I'll have to wait it out to join and get my American goodies.  Oh wait I think Steven's aunt is still a member, maybe she'll let us tag along on one of her trips....hehehe.

Oh! That's such a bummer! I wanted to go to Costco in Reading before the UKY get-together at Chilis on 22 May but it looks like I won't qualify for membership.

*sniff*
