Nor did I see one that would stand up to a long distance haul like this.

If the crate is suitable for a long distance trip, it'll have a label somewhere on it saying that it's approved for that use. I can't remember the name of the body that approves it (some acronym, I think), but that's what you should look for. I'm fairly sure the PETS website explains that. Either that, or your airline will know.

I bought my crate at PetCo, and it came with detachable food and water dishes - but that was a long time ago.

IATA is what you want to look for because it is the group that approves international airline crates for pets.  The ones Meg posted are IATA approved.

I will definitly ask them to put ours as close as possible to eachother.  They will probably just sleep after they get settled a bit.  About these food and water things, how does that work??  I looked at Petco the other day and didn't see any that had a food or water dish with them.  Nor did I see one that would stand up to a long distance haul like this.

For water, I bought bottles that resemble the ones used in hamster cages, only for small dogs instead (I think it was a half-litre bottle) - you know, the ones with metal spouts that only drip if the animal licks or sucks at it?  They clamp on to the outside of the door and the spout sticks through the door into the crate, so there's access.  We didn't fill ours up until we checked them in at BA World Cargo in Atlanta, because ours did leak a bit. :)  Food-wise, they're not actually allowed food during the trip - it's not good for them - so what they really want is one of those molded plastic bowls that clips on to the wire mesh door, for when they land in the UK and can be fed.

IATA is what you want to look for because it is the group that approves international airline crates for pets.  The ones Meg posted are IATA approved.

Yep - strangely enough, I never once found an actual "IATA approved" label on any of the carriers I looked at, but Petmate was recommended to me by the airline, so that's what I went for. :)

Thanks all, I'll have to do some more digging on it.  It looks like my father-in-law may fly with them so they won't be unaccompanied anymore.  But the 2 approved airlines out of Chicago don't connect to Iowa.  GRRRR..... So he may have to book 2 separate flights and hope that it works out time wise and nothing gets delayed.  Unless I'm not understanding it right.  He would like to fly with Virgin which doesn't connect to Iowa.  BA must be connected with United or something because you can get a BA connection in chicago from here.  We're just trying to make things really hard for ourselves!
Thanks for the crate info though.  That gives me a starting point.

I am flying BA out of Atlanta into LGW.  Has anyone used a Pets-Mate carrier?  I am looking at 2 of the Intermediate size for 2 larger cats.  The bigger of the two weighs 18 lbs and is 24 " from floor to top of his tail when it is straight in the air.  I will call BA and ask if this brand is acceptable with them.  The label on the carrier says it's IATA approved.
Thanks
Ric

My guys flew over (ATL-LGW via BA, last October) in Petmate Vari-Kennels - this size:

http://www.petmate.com/Catalog.plx?ID=1515&SizeID=5

They were each around 11lbs when we moved, and had plenty of room.   Xan is about 16.5lbs now and still fits into the old crate just fine, so your 18lb kitty might be okay with the medium one - but going larger won't hurt.  One consideration is transport (non-airline) - I found that the medium crates were almost too large to easily maneuver, dimension-wise (the crate was almost too large to fit into the back door of our car, both here and in the US).

Hope this helps!

My cat weighed about 23 lbs when I brought him over, and I needed a dog crate.   :-\\\\
23 lbs?!!! And I thought my cat was big at 14 pounds.  But how cute, more to love!  ;D

Meg, I think your cat crates are the same size crates my cats used when they flew here to the UK as well. my cats were 14 pounds & 10 pounds at the time they both have put on weight since moving here to the UK.

Yeah, my guys were both around 11lbs when we moved, and now Toby is 12lbs and Xan is over 16lbs!   :o
