Visiting Edinburgh
« on: March 09, 2004, 03:30:11 PM »
I have two friends visiting me from the states this week and we'll be spending two days up in Edinburgh.  Other than the Castle, can anybody recommend other places to visit while we are there. or maybe some good restaurants, pubs, or clubs?

Thanks

My personal choice of places to visit in addition to the Castle might include:
Sightseeing bus http://www.edinburgh-hotels-toolkit.com/briefing/edinburgh_bus_tours.htm
Royal Mile http://www.royalmile.com/
Holyrood House http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page559.asp
Royal Yacht (Brittania) http://www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk/
Forth Bridges
Princes Street
Falkirk Wheel http://www.falkirk-wheel.com/
but it's really down to what you and your friends like to do.  Pubs / restaurants / clubs - not really my thing, but you have to try haggis, neaps and tatties, and the Scotch.

Well, if the Falkirk Wheel can be mentioned, then so can Linlithgow Palace!  ;)

I live in Linlithgow & work in Edinburgh.
My fave pub in Edinburgh is the Guildford Arms... traditional Victorian style, and good beer.  Another decent place is the Standing Order in George Street... a huge Wetherspoons pub in a really nice building that was once a bank.

Ones to avoid (too touristy!!) are Dirty Dick's, Filthy McNastys, and another one called something like the Bad Ass... all in the west end of Rose Street.

When I was visiting from the states(before I met my s.o.), I LOVED the Falkirk Wheel and the Forth Bridges. I only got to see Linlithgow Castle from a distance, though. :(

Visiting with him at New Years, I have to admit to not noticing much as I was just so happy to be there with HIM, but just walking along the Royal Mile was fantastic!
