when do you pay deposits and such

wait a minute, I'm really confused now.  I always thought that when an agent checked your "credit" to rent a house, they were talking about actual credit (checking with experian and other credit bureaus, etc.)  But julia_atlanta seems to be talking about references, which I thought was a different thing!

So are credit checks and reference checks in fact the same thing when renting a house in the UK??

They call it a credit check but it's not the same as a credit check you would have to pass to obtain financial services.  It's basically to verify your income & references.

ahh, okay.  I've been under the wrong impression for a while, though!  Glad to have that cleared up.

i could be confusing things. perhaps they will be doing both credit and reference checks.

I think it differs.  When we rented I had to get my mum to act as guarantor because I am self employed so without a guaranteed income they wouldn't okay me.
