Or perhaps we could move over and sign up with temp agencies, hoping to get temp work while looking for jobs in our fields?  However, neither of us has any office-y type skills, and it seems that temp agencies mostly do those kind of placements.

I don't know what industry you work in, but you could check with the temp agency to see if they have a specialized division.  For example, Kelly Services has a division called Kelly Scientific Resources. Kelly is an international company, so you could try them first! Hope this helps!
