(for example, it's been revealed that the 21/7 failed bombers used hydrogen peroxide in the bombs).

True, but that was 440 litres, not a single bottle for personal use.

Yeah, it was much more than you'd buy in a pharmacy - we still have to be careful though, just in case the products are likely to be misused.

Although it might seem like a stupid thing to do, it's surprising the number of people who come back to the same pharmacy counter every week to buy the same product - we can refuse to serve them if we believe they do not have a genuine reason to purchase it.

A few years ago, there was a man who came in every 2 weeks like clockwork to buy a large bottle of Benylin Original for dry coughs - no one should need that much cough medicine and especially not all year round.

Most pharmacies have also now stopped selling bottles of citric acid, because it can be used for drugs, even though the majority of people plan to use it for cooking!

Maybe they could make a very small bomb. Or maybe they could make 900 trips to Boots until they have enough. Seriously, I'd be a little worried if all that stands between us and a major terrorist attack is a shop assistant.  No offence to anyone who works in a shop, but I don't think counter terrorism is part of the usual training.

what is savalon?  (sp?) that's what my boy uses on cuts.  is it just a "healing" creme, not anti-biotic?

Savlon is an antiseptic cream - like Germoline and TCP - but that's all - it's not antibiotic.

At the risk of sounding like Paul1966, that is just scarily big brotherish.  I mean if I want to drink cough syrup by the gallon and it's legal to buy, then surely that's my business.

Yeah, there is lots of things that I wish were easier to get.  In the US, it's the sudafed that they keep an eye on, for people making meth.  Unless I'm really, really sick, I don't stand in line just to pick some up, but I would like to be able to keep some on hand just in case!

This thread is definitely causing me to put neosporin on my "to bring" list!

Exactly! I totally agree! If we want to ruin our health with alcohol, cigarettes and cough meds then so we shall.

I always bring Niquil liqua-gels when I go to the USA. I'm adding Neosporin for my next trip.

Fair enough, it is your business. However, we do come across people who don't realise that they have been taking too much of a particular medication, or older people who may forget what other medication they are already on, so the questions are a way to make sure they know what they're buying and that they know how to take it correctly.

Sometimes it can be painfully obvious when, for example, someone is buying painkillers because they are addicted to them and we are allowed to refuse to serve them if we feel it is necessary (much like a bartender refusing to serve alchohol to someone who is very drunk, or known to be an alchoholic) - there are known drug addicts who frequent our store and we are told to look out for them and not to serve them painkillers etc.

I also bring Neosporin back from home.

I think it's a bit backwards that you can buy codeine here and not antibiotic cream!

OMG, I was just thinking that the other day when those Neurofen with Codeine adverts started on tele.  Stupidly ridiculous.  There are prescription meds in the states that are over the counter here in the UK and there's a total lack of generic store brand alternatives to everyday meds.  Quite backward, but if DH hears me say it I'll never hear the end of it.   ::)  (I miss Wal*Mart's Equate.)
