Cat from England to New York
« on: July 12, 2007, 11:24:49 AM »
I am not planning on moving to the USA for another few years... but have been wondering since I got my cat what is going to be the cost to bring him back to the USA and how much hassle will it be (regardless, hes coming, i just want to get an idea what im getting myself into)?

Has anyone else brought a cat specifically from England to America?

I just brought kitty home with me from England to USA one month ago.  You just need a simple health certificate that you can get up to 30 days before you travel from pretty much any vets office.  If anyone tells you that you don't need it (ie. the airline) GET THE CERTIFICATE ANYWAY.  We were told we didn't need anything and got to the airport and couldn't travel without it!  Had to scramble around to try to make a later flight.  And the cost was about £60 for the certifacte (but that could have been rush charges) and about $80 for her to fly as cargo.  Not terribly expensive considering the cost I went through to get her to England.

And your kitten is so cute  ;D

Thanks for your help Kristina!! For some reason, I was told it would be a lot more difficult and expensive.  What airline did you fly with??

Good luck with the move!

Speaking of moving with cats, what do you need to do in order to bring them with you to the UK from the US? Thanks!

You're not allowed to put your pet to sleep or give them any sedatives.  They are fine in the cargo department...they don't like it, but they live through it.  My cat has now been on 3 airplanes!

It's a big, long, expensive process that you must start about 7 months before the pet can move.  Check out this board as there's load of information.  Also check out the defra website.
