What county of area is the best place to live?
« on: July 13, 2007, 01:05:34 AM »
Where in England is the best place to live and raise family.  Take into consideration, house prices , traffic jams and other unpleasant things.

Does it have to be England? What about Wales or Scotland?

That is such a broad question, it is impossible to answer, and depends very much on your personal situation and preferences.

Also, there will always be tradeoffs. For example, if you avoid a crowded city area with lots of noise and traffic jams, you may find it harder to get to shops and may have to choose between a long commute or a lower-paying job.

Yorkshire! ;D

(And here with Yorkshire, you actually get four counties - not just one:  West Yorks, North Yorks, South Yorks, and East Riding.  Plus you get to live in the 'Texas' of England...  No, it's nothing like Texas, where I wouldn't choose to live myself.  But it's the biggest & the best - a modest, tolerable English sort of Texas thing going on. :))
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

I was thinking about this thread earlier and thought, hmm, well there are some beautiful counties but usually there are no jobs there, then there are counties that have plenty of jobs (like where we live) but its OTT crowded, not too pretty and full of "not so nice" people.

Carolyn is right...Yorkshire! Its so lovely AND there are good jobs easy enough to commute to. Plus - in my opinion the further north you go...the friendlier the people. If I had to do it all over again (moving back to the states), hands down I would pick Yorkshire.  :)

Norfolk has much to recommend it.  The crime rate is below average, especially so right out here in the wilds where its only about half the national average.  Traffic is light compared to many parts of the country, and while we're not on the same scale as Montana or Wyoming, the density of population is low by English standards, so there is plenty of open space.

As has been mentioned though, the downside is that there are fewer opportunities for work and wages are lower.

Hiya

Everyone of course is going to post that their place/area is the best cos they live there!!!

As already mentioned, your question is impossible to answer - to illustrate, Jimmy911, how long is a piece of string?!

You need to work out what the best place is for YOU and your individual circumstances. You have a family, consider what they want. Then, with that basic criteria, start to research areas of the UK which match those requirements. If an area offers all or probably most of what you'd like, shortlist it and then find maybe 3-4 other places that match that or come close to that. Then go visit or find out which of that shortlist seems to be the best, finally, once chosen, move on with the relocation aspects...

Personally, I like where I am in terms of being right next to the hustle and bustle of London and city life and all that offers, and also right next to countryside and a slower pace whenever I need to slow down a bit. So I'm just outside of the M25 in a place called Slough, right next to Heathrow (my 2nd home - if you look carefully, you'll see a little hut with my name on it in one of the terminals!!)

Good luck - yer have a lot of research to do!

Overpriced, overcrowded, polluted, escalating crime, high taxes and parking charges, "Red Ken,"  the congestion charge.....
