Yep, contact are great for chopping onions. I think they actually shield your eyes somehow as well as making them more dry.

I used to have something that was to make chopping onions easier but got rid of it. Too much faff. What I really need are better knives!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

You do?!? Some people's eyes water when they chop onions, but I have tears literally rolling down my face non-stop. I can't even see what I'm doing half the time.

I just bought this book of useless facts, and apparently if you chew gum while chopping onions, you won't cry. I don't know if it's true or not!

My sister just bought that chopper thing this weekend. I don't know if she's used it yet, but she said it was featured in Good Housekeeping and was on the Today show or some such. It sure looks mighty helpful, and doesn't look as hard to clean as some choppers with 3000 removable parts you have to wash.

I completely agree with you about not liking too much faff when it comes to kitchen utensils. I felt a bit ashamed about asking my mom to get me one of these, but seriously, it rocks.

I too will have streaming tears when chopping onions to the point where I can no longer see what I'm doing...ooops! :P  It's better if the onions are refrigerator cold though.

We actually registered for one of those at BB&B - DH has a nasty habit of slicing his fingers instead of the onions, and I'm tired of doing all the prep work! - but didn't get it. :(

Someone once told me to leave the kitchen faucet running cold water while chopping onions.  Completely wasteful, and no idea why, but it works!

I second the contacts vs. glasses thing - only problem is that I like to be good and comfy when I cook, which means contacts out and pjs on!  ;D

I have a magic bullet also, and I love it! Its great for chopping loads of garlic, or making breadcrumbs! But if you aren't careful, it does make soup of things.

Hmmm, how big are the resulting squares? I like my onions pretty finely chopped...

I'm another one that ends up with burning, streaming eyes from onions, and I keep worrying that I'm going to cut off a finger one of these days.  :P

Well, the squares can be 2 sizes, either super small, or a little bit bigger.
Can't describe the size better than that! Sorry!!!

Me, too.  I have tried every trick known to humankind, and none of them work.  In fact, I am so sensitive to onions I can tell when someone is chopping one.... ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HOUSE.

Sucks to be me. :(

Absolutely true...I swear by this "old wives tale"!
