Anyone brought their US bought iPoD and/or laptop?
« on: July 22, 2007, 08:32:51 PM »
I have a nice shiny new iPod Video, but wondering if I can use it over in the UK.  Will it work with a U.K. computer (for synching, etc)?  Anyone have any experience with this?  Know which adapter to buy?

yes to both for me (my laptop and my iPod nano), and they'll be fine. The iPod works with a UK computer just like a US one. Most US mobile electronics are perfectly compatible with UK electrical systems (as in, they're dual-voltage)- check your adapters to make sure though (should say something like 110-240V, if it does you're good to go.)

You'll just need either a basic plug adapter to make the cords fit to UK plugs, or buy new UK adapters/cords from the shop.

If you do a search, you'll find lots of threads about this, but the short answer is yes. Laptops are designed to be used anywhere (you just need a plug adaptor, no need to convert the voltage). And the iPod isn't an issue at all as that just needs a USB port which all new computers have.

Horay for iPods!  I have a new UK iPod and use it with my US iBook.  All is good!  :)

My iPod and MacBook are both US-bought - the iPod charges via USB port, so no converter/adapter issues there, and I bought a kit with different plug bits from Apple for my MacBook power brick, which was much cheaper than buying a UK adapter cord.  (That sounds really confusing - if you have a Mac, I'll explain further.)

I bought my laptop from the US and just cut off the US plug and connected the UK one.  No problems at all and very cheap.

Just check the label on the power supply first.  Although practically all laptop supplies these days are switched-mode types designed to work on anything from about 90 to 250 volts, it's just possible that you might have one which isn't.  Connecting 240V to a unit intended for 120V lets out all the magic smoke which makes it work.   ;)

DH got a lead for my laptop at Maplins - less than £10.  There are pros to brining a US iPod over to the UK: you can access both the US & UK download sites for iTunes!  I get the free downloads each week plus podcasts from both...  You just have to set each account up with different email addys, but hey twice the free stuff!  Plus different things to download from each country!   8)

Don't you need a legit billing address in each country as well?

I don't think so, Elizabeth. I think they just go by your IP address. I use an American bank (with a UK billing address) and I'm still able to access both the US and UK iTunes stores. What I did was set up an additional account, and then I authorized both accounts for one computer (if that makes sense).

Huh.  I thought I'd tried to do that but because I didn't have a billing address to list in the U.S. (at the time), I couldn't access the U.S. site.
Now, I have the U.S. billing address, and I can't access the U.K. site.  :-\\\\

Are you using the same email address for your account?  The way to do it is use 2 different email addresses...

I list my mom's address as my billing address for my US account & my current address for my one in the UK.

I list my mom's address as my billing address for my US account & my current address for my one in the UK.

THAT is what I originally meant!!  Thought I was missing something.
Sorry if it wasn't clear.
