Risotto
« on: July 27, 2007, 12:30:26 PM »
No question, but I have spent the whole week with my work colleagues taking the mick out of me because I can't say Risotto.

Anyone else??

How do they say it?  How do you say it?  Curious.

I think there are different pronounciations of risotto depending on where you come from. I believe that the US pronounciation is generally 'rizz-o-toe', whereas the UK pronounciation is usually 'rizz-otto'.

I found these two websites where you click on the sound icon & can hear how it's pronounced...

Also the Italian pronounciation, so I'd guess that makes it the right one.

It's hard to write phonetically, but my dh says something close to "riss ah toe" rather than my "rizz ohtoe". He did tease me a bit for it once or twice and I've probably started saying it more like he does now out of habit....

Hee hee!  I wasn't entirely sure myself how to pronounce it, and Steve gets endless entertainment out of how I pronounce some things.  Now, no more sleepless nights over how to pronounce 'risotto'... ;)

not to detract from the pronunciation discussion of risotto, but...

i made it last week for the first time and it turned out absolutely perfectly.

problem was, having made it, i knew how much freaking butter went into it & it nearly turned my stomach to eat it :-\\\\

I'm in the US but I know they pronouce it differently in the UK because I watch all of Gordon Ramsay's shows and he's always pissed off that someone has ruined the risotto!  [smiley=shout.gif] LOL

I'm also glad to know the correct pronunciation!

How much freaking butter did go into it? I only use a tablespoon or two, maybe adding a bit more at the end. Still comes out mighty tasty. ;)

The best risotto I've ever made, hands-down, was the one with beetroot. Unbelievably gorgeous colour*, too. And I don't care much for beetroot, as a general rule.

*Please note, my fingers typed this spelling without conscious direction from my brain.  :o But that's a whole other subject...

My husband makes a mean risotto, but I don't think he uses too much butter - will have to check with him on that though.  He does insist that a good risotto depends on an underpinning of a good quality (homemade) chicken stock, and scoffed recently at my suggestion of making a vegetarian version (sans chicken stock).

Dan (the boyf) makes a LOVELY WW mushroom risotto which is really low in points.  If you can hang out til Monday, i'd be happy to steal the recipe.
