There's a big dept store in Cardiff called Howells.  They have an amazing food section with all kinds of temptations including a small American corner where you can buy packets of grits, cereal, canned pumpkin, and the likes including corn syrup.  I guess I'll head there.  I'll have to go see if the international food shop has pecans.

Now if I could stop being tempted by the Lucky Charms.  It just seems criminal to charge £6.75 for a box of cereal!

Several of the 'regular' stores do carry pecans (just remember to ask for PEEcans, not peCAHns), but in much smaller packaging, so you'd have to buy several.
(Though you could probably find larger packages at health food places like Holland & Barrett)

Even my pathetic little local Tesco carries pecans!

All this talk has got me thinking that, since Elizabeth refuses to come make one for me  ;), I might just have to make a pecan pie for Thanksgiving this year. Maybe here I can find a premade crust that's not full of junk I'm unwilling to eat.

Has anybody actually tried using golden syrup in a pecan pie? I don't get on too well with corn syrup, even if I could find it around here, not having the benefit of Harrods. :P But if it's going to be a disaster without corn syrup, I can have J pick some up in the US this weekend.

I'd give it a whirl, and mix in some maple syrup, and/or a bit of treacle as suggested earlier.
(not a blatant refusal, just bad timing!) ;)

Oh that's an idea!  But doesn't that taste sort of molasses-y?

That's the funny thing - it doesn't.  I don't like treacly...too dark and bitter and a bit nasty, but mixed up with everything else it is scrummy.  I have a feeling that there may be golden syrup as well, but it's been years since I made it so can't remember.

I have some apple pie in the oven right now, made from scratch.  I used butter in the dough.  It's a new dough recipe I'm trying out so we'll see how it turns out!

I love the "PIE" idea.  I'm so going to steal that!  I've done apples and leaves on my crust, but that was just cute!
