Do you decorate your pastry in any way?  (The top crust?)

I make more savoury pies than sweet fruit ones and, yes, I do decorate the top crust. I cut out pastry leaves 'n' stuff when I do a chicken pot pie. Then brush the whole lot with an egg wash. It looks lovely and glossy and golden and yummy!

Quite a few Crisco/marg/shortening devotees out there, although butter is gaining!  I'll have to say the butter crust does taste really good.  I'm going to try the White Flora next time, as QG suggested that to me quite awhile ago & as some of you also mentioned it.

chary, I'm happy to hear about any & all pies!  I want to try making your chicken pot pie sometime & I think I got the recipe sometime from you on a previous thread.

I'm hope y'all get to making some pies & post piccies!  I should have put a photo of mine, but the majority of it is gone now.

We just picked the blackberries (OUCH!!!) and put the pie together. I used Britwife's recommended oil crust with a bit of added sugar.
I'll be back soon with our pie report...

I made peach cobbler last night and something is wrong.  I think the peaches are sweeter than the ones at home and so I should have added less sugar, or a little more corn starch.

Mmmmmm, peach cobbler!  If you're using Spanish peaches, I do find some of them to be ever so sweet (and delicious!).  In fact, it wasn't until I moved here that I actually began to enjoy just eating fresh peaches outright - if they are the Spanish ones.  So good!  That's one of my favorite fruits now.  I think I'll do peach cobbler next!

Those blackberry brambles sure do bite!  We were out walking today, but the blackberries up our way aren't ready yet.  The ones that I purchased for my pie were from Kent.

I hope you can post a photo along with your pie report, pkessler! ;D

Yes, please, especially about the crust.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

OK, I voted - butter baby! But I've been known to cheat and use store-bought. I'm not wild about the oil-based one. It just feels wrong to me!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Lol!  I cheated for years & years.  But I'm trying to get back to making my own - it just tastes (and looks) so much better.  Then again, maybe that's not such a good thing... :-[

I will try the oil-based one sometime, but I'm just concerned it wouldn't be as light & flaky as using the products that hold air?

Ok... Pie was really good, but I am still in dire pain from the nettles!! The crust is so wonderfully easy to make and came out very flaky, it does miss a bit of the buttery flavor though. I took a picture, but I can't find the cable to upload it.  :P

Any pies this weekend ladies (or gentlemen)? :)

I'm hankering for some peach pie or cobbler, but thought I ought to give the pastry a pass for a week or so.  (My waistline will thank me!)

No pies but I did just make tart pastry for a quiche.  Butter all the way!  ;)
