Ironically, that made me appreciate the premium ice cream even more, because they really DO put more into it.

That's why I like making my own! I know exactly what goes into it!  ;D

I shelled out the big bucks for vanilla Hagendaaz to go with our homegrown strawberries.  And I didn't like it.  Too sweet!

The strawberries weren't that great, either.

My question is, why can't you get any ice cream without chocolate in it??  In other words, I want some fruit ice cream - like peach, strawberry, etc.  I don't particularly like chocolate ice cream or ice cream with chocolate bits in it and I really miss the flavors from the US.

There's loads of ice cream without chocolate although maybe not the exact kind you want. Check out the Mackies link I posted before. Also, Carte d'Or do some fruity ones.

Tesco and Shoprite both had Ben & Jerry 1/2 price (or bogo) last week.

Usually, living on the Isle of Man is more on an inconvenience than anything, but I have to say we have the best ice cream I've ever tasted here (Davisons). It comes in about 60 flavors and it's dirt cheap. Yay!

The Mackies looks great - sadly I haven't seen it in our stores, or any of the nice Carte d'Or ones.  I have seen strawberries and cream type in Waitrose but that's about it.  I'm just surprised at how it seems like the majority of ice cream seems to have some sort of chocolate in it - even if it's got fruit, it's ALSO got chocolate or caramel?

Here's an example - the Ben and Jerry's UK site has got loads of nice looking flavors and every single one has chocolate of some sort other than Peace of Cake, which has cookie pieces.  And maybe there's plain vanilla as well.  They have a new one called Bohemian Raspberry that sounds great - but it has fudge brownie pieces in it!!  Grrrrr.

Whereas the Ben and Jerry's US site has organic strawberry, butter pecan, peach cobbler, some weird looking apple variety, butter pecan, pistachio, strawberry cheesecake, etc...in addition to all the chocolatey ones.

Just different market tastes, I guess.  And B&J is a US company so there's more variety there as well.

I can't say I ever noticed it in England but their website lists about a million supermarkets all over the UK that supposedly stock it.

Geeta, Tesco has the Carte D'Or and I'm pretty sure I used to get it from Sainsburys as well.

Yes, I agree that the flavor choice here isn't as good. I miss Breyers, too. I love their vanilla and mint chocolate chip.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Amen to that!!!!!  Ben and Jerry's is perticularly guilty of this.  I can only think of ONE ice cream they offer that does not have chocolate, it's the vanilla one.  I do not like chocolate but I do like ice cream and I do like some of their ice cream and I hate having to pick chocolate chunks out!  I love Chunky Monkey, hate the chocolate in it.

For this reason, I mostly buy Haagen Dazs.  I love their Special Edition Mango and Passionfruit ice cream.  I have already eaten about 5 tubs of it. Their Dulce De Leche is to die for as is the Rum Raisin. I don't mind paying the price for good ice cream but I do not like to pay a high price for a tub of ice cream and end up picking out half the contents because it's chocolate!

I will definitely be buying an ice cream machine when we move to the US.

JuneHawk, you've just validated my suspicions.  I knew I couldn't have been the only one to be annoyed by this ! :)

LOL. I was just telling my husband....."See??? I'm not the only one bothered by this chocolate business!"  Even though he likes chocolate, he agrees with me!
