Shipping less than 100 cu/ft from Los Angeles to London
« on: August 02, 2007, 11:40:58 PM »
Hi all,

I'm moving from Los Angeles, CA to London. I'm only going to be shipping boxes.

Currently, I have 15 U-Haul boxes in three sizes (Large: 4.5 cu/ft; Medium: 3.0 cu/ft; and Small: 1.5 cu/ft). These 15 have added upto 40.5 cu/ft. I will most probably pack another 5-10 but do not envision having more than 75-80 cu/ft to ship.

So the question is, do I even bother with some of the big movers listed on this site? Is my cargo too small? I'm sure they have a minimum size/weight requirement.

Would it be easier to ship via UPS, FedEx, etc?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

-Mehdi

I used the post office but they don't do sea shipments anymore.  You can try international movers who will take grouped shipments or grouped baggage.  I sent 20 boxes to CA that way.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

If you ship by FedEx/UPS they charge by weight not volume. We shipped 10 boxes, a total of 400 pounds, by UPS, and it worked out to about $3/pound including insurance. The nice thing about FedEx and UPS both is that they allow you to combine all your boxes into one shipment and they charge you by the total weight. The price per pound goes down substantially as the weight goes up. The post office, on the other hand, charges you for each box individually.

See, my boxes were heavy (lots of books--too many for m-bags) and even with the price going down to $3/lb a typical box would have cost me about $150--just for one box!  Keep in mind that the shipment size is for the total grouping of boxes.  Where you have different sized boxes, all together they may take up a bit more room than the sum of each box's size because of how they fit together.  At 15 boxes, I'm guessing you are still under the size limit, but it may be cheaper still to use upakweship.  Check out your different options.  I say call and get a free quote from them and call the others.  I only had 20-30 boxes (all but three were Uhaul small boxes)  and upakweship was tons cheaper for me than UPS or such. Plus, since you live in LA, which is one of their major shipping areas, it will cost you a lot less than it did me.  I had to also pay for them to get it from Idaho to a port, and I still felt it was a reasonable price and she helped me through it all.

God!  I have a similar problem - trying to sort out how to move a small amount of stuff (the last of everything I have in the US) over here from Tampa.  Thing is, I was in such a rush when I was moving myself over, most of it isn't well packed - more or less just tossed into various boxes & placed in storage.

My time on a visit to the US this autumn is going to be so limited - I don't want to spend time repacking it all properly (which really needs to be done or else it won't be worth sending it over, just to get broken in transit).

So what do you think is my best bet for paying someone to pack it right & ship it over?  It's not much - books, (fragile) dishes & a bit of assorted kitchen stuff.

I used them as well. They were very reasonable and everything got here on time.

The difference in quotes I got from the folks who pack (Robinson's) and the ones who don't (upakweship) is about £300, BUT... upakweship did not come out to take a 'live' look, so I don't know how accurate that cost really is.

My concern is, if I were to pack stuff myself, how much more of a cost/hassle might it be re:  customs, delivery, etc.?

customs was easy for me.  Alison just sent me the forms I needed.  She knew exactly what I needed and had the forms custom made for me.  Couldn't have been easier.  She also paid all the port fees and such since it was all delivered to my home.  I did have one minor thing when the moving company they hire here in the UK sent me a packet requesting the customs paperwork and a fee--it seems they lost them.  I panicked and sent off a quick email to Alison, within 15 minutes it was all taken care of and my packages were back on their way at no cost.  She had saved copies of everything and had it all sorted immediately.

Has anyone shipped less than 50 cu ft with Upakweship?  if so, what was the average cost?  I probably will request a quote but I just want something to compare it too.  I am near a port city (Boston).

I think they have a minimum of 100 feet for a sizeable shipment.  You'll have to check with them.
