Provolone Cheese?
« on: March 17, 2004, 02:58:40 PM »
Does anyone know if this exists over here? I've searched my local ASDA and Sainsbury's for it but have not been able to locate it.

No biggy if it is not over here but I was just wondering if it is sold by another name?

Thanks!

Maureen

Oddly enough, Sainsbury's is one of the few places that I've been able to find provolone.  Their cheese is usually grouped by countries, so the provolone is with the Italian cheeses.  It's a small, green package in a half-circle shape.

Other than that, we've only been able to find it in Italian deli's in London.

I've been searching for it for nearly six months and haven't had any luck yet.  Hopefully I'll stumble across it in Sainsbury's one day!

Just reviving this to say that Waitrose does Provolone cheese only it's called something like Provolona or Provelona... it's in with the Italian cheeses in the deli counter..... I love Waitrose...  love love love it...

The last few weeks at Sainsburys, I've noticed that they no longer seem to stock it with their other Italian cheeses.  Dunno if they have it at the deli counter tho.

Oh someone else who is doing the hunt for Provolone.  I finally found it in an Italian Deli.  Try there because I have never seen it in the typical grocery stores.

Good luck in your search.  It took me a year.  If you live in Kent I can tell you where I purchase mine.

It's available at Waitrose... you can order it online if you  are near one.  You can go to the shop and buy it.

Provalone Valpadana is what it is called.  Granted it's aged a bit longer than the american made provolone 7 months I think for this particular one.

Provalone like Romano (that someone else was looking for) are from Italy.  We are close to Italy ...you can find it.  If you are near London try the suggested Italian delis... bythesea can you post where in Kent you find it?  Thanks!

For those with easy access to central London, there is a wonderful Italian deli in Soho called Lina Stores where you can find a zillion kinds of Italian cheese and lots of yummy anti pasti, and various imported pastas, meat, home made breads AND be greeted with a cheery "ciao bella!"

Hi Everyone

Thanks for all the info.. I was able to find provolone at Waitrose but I also found this site: http://www.savoria.co.uk/.. I've not ordered from them but thought it might be useful for anyone that's not close to London or near a Waitrose.

Maureen
