Problems ripping an mpg (voice/picture out of sync)
« on: August 05, 2007, 01:06:27 PM »
I recently used trial software (a few programs, actually) to rip an mpg from a dvd (the dvd I had burned from a VHS tape of an old Daily Show episode). I have a site about the Boll Weevil Monument, and the episode was about the monument. People have asked me about adding a clip of the show over the years, but I had never known how to make one -- until now.

The problem is that after about one minute, the words and video get out of sync -- the video is shown before the corresponding words are spoken. Any ideas how to fix this? I got the problem after ripping it about 3 times with 3 different types of software.

Here's the clip: http://www.weevilwonderland.com/WeevilCity.mpg

I'm not familiar with the conversion packages and their details as I have little to do with MPG video, but as a first step I would say check through any recording options available to make sure that PTS (Presentation Time Stamp) is enabled for both audio and video streams.  MPEG playback software uses these time codes to keep the audio and video synchronized, so if they are not present you can be at the mercy of the processing speed: The amount by which video and audio are out may well differ from one system to another.

I think Dennis might have some more specific ideas as I get the impression he tends to follow modern software quite closely.

I'm on dial-up at the moment so the MPG is rather too large for me to download and view comfortably, but on the purely non-technical side I too found the monument to a pest quite fascinating when I visited Enterprise.   For some reason I didn't get a close up photo, only a general view from a distance:  :)

How cool that you've been to Enterprise! It's not exactly a place people go out of their way to visit as a tourist (unless perhaps they are nearby anyway). The best shots of the monument are gotten by walking out into the middle of the street (something I've done several times when I was a reporter and for my Web site!).

I'd suggest trying Prism. It's free software and will work with your dvd vob files. I'd also recommend converting to windows media instead of mpg so that your filesize is smaller and streams better from your webserver, saving you bandwidth.

www.nchsoftware.com/prism/

I used to convert dvds from an organisation for their own website broadcasts, at the time I had to convert 3 ways to get windows media files at the end. I don't think Prism was around then.

Let us know how you get on. :)

Cool, I don't think I tried that one yet! I'll give it a go and let y'all know how it works out. :)

I always like to get out and visit the "real" places away from the big tourist spots.  :)

There was quite some activity going on the day I was in town:

Rides on the town's old fire truck for the kids

Bell ringing outside the radio station

But back to the topic at hand.....

Leah's point about using a format which saves you bandwidth is a valid one, but you might restrict your audience a little going to Windows media, as I'd say it's not quite so widely viewable as MPEG.

Hi groovy yank!

I haven't got 'specific' help for you as I dont usually get any problems whatsoever with my DVD/VOB to MPEG rips. However I do have some pointers.

Sync issues can be due to your processor not 'being up to the task' - Video encoding and conversion is a really intensive process and susceptible to outside interference. Shut down ALLLL porgrams on your PC to free up as much resources as possible. Ideally, you should have as much RAM as possible and some more RAM too!

dont have any other programs running when you do the conversion, I'd advise unplugging the internet and switching off security software as well whilst the process goes through - obvously, when you want to go back on the net, switch the security software back on!

I use a program called Video Vault for my Rips (also looking to get CloneDVD)- i've never had an problems with it. It will import into MPEG format from a multitude of sources and then that can be re-encoded if needed (ipod, psp and PDA formats for instance) With non copy protected source material you should be able to import rightaway.

Bear in mind, I've not tried importing from sources such as video tape and/or movie cameras etc, there may be interim steps needed - look at what you have to decide on what's best.

finally - check out a site called http://www.afterdawn.com/ it a site where everything to do with PC and media files and encoding/recoding can be and is discussed - it's pretty good - nip over to the forums and there's a wealth of info. CloneDVD gets very rave reviews indeed! so much so that I'm probably going to convert!

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Yep, those pics are classic Enterprise, and it's certainly off the beaten path (though some go that way to head to Florida beaches). Judging from the cars, that was early '80s?

Holy cow, I've got CloneDVD! I didn't realize I could use it to make an mpg or windows file (though for all I know, that's what it's making when you copy anything, but just burns it to a DVD that will play in you dvd player). I'll give that a go. That program is great!

I was just pointing the car in whichever direction took my fancy from the map and exploring.  :)    I know I came over via Pretoria and Blakely, Ga., then I remember making a stop in Dothan, Ala.   From the places I remember and the photo sequence, I think from Enterprise I headed over to Opp and maybe Andalusia, then up through Luverne, Troy, Union Springs, and on to Auburn.

It was 1993, somewhere around October or November if I recall correctly.  That does look like an early/mid-1980s Buick in the fire truck photo though.

Any luck sorting out the problem yet?

By the way, do you know Brook Benton's novelty song about the Boll Weevil?

Actually, I need to try using clonedvd, but haven't yet. I've been busily trying to learn Dreamweaver so I can revamp my Web page (I created it using hand-coded html and notepad, using the book "HTML Goodies" as a guide) and create one for my husband. I'm trying to jazz up my basic Web design knowledge, and adding this clip is part of that.

I had forgotten about that boll weevil song, thanks for reminding me! I should include the lyrics on my page.

I just ripped the clip using cloneDVD, putting it in a VOB format. It's 242 megs! Yikes! The other file I have is 34 (the one that plays out of sync). I think I only have 100 megs of space for my Web page, so I'll try one of the other programs ya'll suggested.

Did anyone notice that big ole jug of iced tea in the meeting room?  :P

Incidently, the out of sync voices didn't seem to detract from the story.
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Hey, are you poking fun at my Southern background? Just for that, no sugar in your sweet tea!

And it's good to know the out of sync business doesn't hurt things. The windows media file I made plays perfectly, and in a larger window, but it's an outrageous size (for my limited Web space, anyway). I'll have to see if I can upload something that size on Youtube and just put a link ....
