Toppy Peanut Butter
« on: August 07, 2007, 06:45:13 PM »
I purchased a jar of peanut butter from Aldi recently.  The peanut butter selection at this store was extremely limited so, I went with the one option -- something called Toppy Peanut Butter.

I took it to my dilapidated and crowded apartment and upon further inspection, I saw that there are numerous large references on the label pointing to the fact that this a product made in the US.  "Quality USA", "PRODUCT OF USA", an American flag banner, etc.

Theres also a US-style nutritional label with no British label, which I'm sure is illegal.

It's also a half-sized jar at 350g.

I searched online for "toppy peanut butter" but found only message boards full of British people praising the product for it's "authentic" American flavor.  These people undoubtedly believe that Toppy is a real force in the American peanut butter market.

But of course, I've never seen this peanut butter in the US.

It apparently is made in the US, though because it gives American Blanching Company in Fitzgerald Georgia as the manufacturer.  But to further add the mystery, americanblanching.com (which is apparently the website of the company) is an expired domain name.

I get the feeling that it's just a generic store-brand peanut butter.  But I've never seen the stuff before.  As I said, it's a small jar which people in the US would not buy.  So its clearly made for the overseas market.

I can't comment on the taste of the product because I'd like to find out more about it first.  Aldi sells a lot of questionable food, after all.

So has anybody else ever seen this and can provide any information?

The worst that can happen is that it tastes bad.  :D

And in that case you could always use it to make a birdfeeder.

Thinking about it.  Isn't BigTop peanut butter the generic one?  You know, the one that comes in a bucket.

And in that case you could always use it to make a birdfeeder.

or mix it with chilli sauce to make a satay.  the chilli should disguise any non-authentic american peanut butter taste.

We used to get it sometimes... tastes pretty darn good.. and a damn sight better than the other non US brands of peanut butter here in the UK.

We like it, but then I don't care if I eat Skippy or Jif or whatever... I just don't like the not made in the USA ones.

I've got a brand new pair of roller skates ...

(never mind)  ;D

Aldi sells a lot of questionable food, after all.

I think both Aldi and Lidl sell a lot of stuff from other countries, so it's probably more that it's unfamiliar than questionable. Most of Lidl's foreign stuff seems to come from Europe, though, rather than the US. Your peanut butter just may be something produced in the US for export only.

Go ahead and try it. It's peanut butter. It won't hurt you!  :)
