Oh for the love of Lidl!
« on: August 07, 2007, 09:32:46 PM »
Does anyone else love Lidl for cheap shopping?  I love their chopped tomatoes and flour as well as their special deals... the penne pasta was loved by my Italian students ( I did not tell them where it came from)!

Last week was Italian week and I have stocked up on truffle pasta, porcini pasta, pasta tri-colore and well lots of others...  this week we are also happy because they have lovely mussles in a can... (mejillones en escabeche) from Galicia as well as other Spanish goodies.  (Though some of what passes for tapas is very odd looking in the fridge section.)

I also like the thinness of their big flour tortillas... oh and cheap spices like garlic granules, whole pepper and the half of veggies and fruit deals they have....(though you have to watch these as sometimes they can have really good produce and sometimes crap produce)..

I wish we had one nearer. We used to go more often, but that was before we moved. I always loved taking my time there, it helps to stock up on cheaper stuff before doing the regular shop.

The dark chocolate mini-bars - sold in 5 packs, I think.  Sooooo delicious.  They have good deals on novelty ice cream bars too - the Yorkie ice cream bars are good.

I found some of the best deals at Lidl's.  A month or so ago they had 1kg of rhubarb for 99p!!  Boy did I stock up!

We get the best cookies there.  They're better than Chips Ahoy and far cheaper! (they're in "American style" branding & called brownie cookies)

Also awesome for cheap booze.

I've never been to one! I know there is one in Kingston, but there must be one closer. I might have to check this out.  ;D

We've got an Aldi as well, but I don't go regularly. It's off a wierd side street, so I forget it exists easily.  :-\\\\

I like our Aldi, and always find a good bargain there, but just wondering if i should seek out Lidl in case it's better...  anyone shopped at both?

We've got an Aldi... are Lidl's better?

We don't have an Aldi close by, but somebody tipped me off to the fact that they sell a Pimms-alike that's only £4 a bottle! And it allegedly tastes just like the real thing! It's called something like Summer Fruit or Summer Berries.

Will someone please buy some and do a taste test for me?

I don't often go to Lidl's, but they do have some fabulous Swiss chocolate. I just get confused about not being able to translate ingredients from their packaging!  :-\\\\

I have and I think Lidl is better.  They have more variety and better quality and some things I don't remember seeing at Aldi, like nice salsas & anti pasti (bearing in mind I haven't been to an Aldi for ages so might have forgotten). Aldi has mainly its own brand stuff where Lidl has various brands.  However Aldi does have jalepeno poppers!

If Lidl was easier to get to I would shop there all the time, but as it is, go once a month to stock up on a few things.

When we were in Canterbury I also used to go to Netto which is basically rubbish but has great bargains. This time last year I remember getting Magnums & Skinny Cow ice cream for half price all the time and I miss getting huge 3kg bags of Tilda basmati rice for a couple of quid.

I've been to both Lidl and Aldi.. I honestly prefer Aldi.... for me it has better deals.. My two moggies prefer the Aldi brand cat food to the Lidl brand.so thats a important thing. lol..
I prefer the taste of things i've bought at Aldi to Lidls.. Hey everyone tastes are different.. The Aldi's near me always has a pretty good choice of things to choose from.
A few months ago i got some marshmellow creme(think Marshmellow Fluff) :) at Aldis... ohhh it does satisfy the occasional craving for a fluffernutter :)
Just my two cents..

I prefer Lidl, but Aldi does much better wines.

Love the chocolate and biscuits and deserts from Lidl, as well as the tinned goods and the pasta.

We get the best cookies there.  They're better than Chips Ahoy and far cheaper! (they're in "American style" branding & called brownie cookies)

Also awesome for cheap booze.

Bought some of these this weekend.  They do apple ones as well - but I was the only one in the family who liked them.   :-\\\\

I love the fact that they carry "real" brands, as well as ones from the continent.  Towards the end of last footie season, we were picking up 8-packs of Carlsberg for less than £4.50!!  And they have Walkers, Pringles, McVities...

They also have wonderful soy and yogurt drinks.  And we bought some "innocent-like" fruit smoothies this weekend for 39p which were delicious!  They were all fruit - listed the individual fruit content like innocent does - and they were the same size.  For almost £1.50 cheaper!  Next time, I'm clearing out a shelf in the fridge and stocking up!

Had frozen pizza from there last night.  Usually 3 medium size pizzas in a box for £2.79 - on special this past weekend for £1.65.

And starting tomorrow, they have this great little stamp you can personalise for £2.99.  Paid £9.99 in Stationery Box for the one I have.

Yes, I love Lidl!!  ;D

Another plus about Lidl is that because most of their product is from continental Europe, you won't find a lot of the E numbers and additives that are still allowed here.

For example, their fizzy lemonade - the cloudy stuff - is 39p/litre and NO aspartame or artificial sweetners.

Ditto their jelly - for parties and cake/bread mixes.

Great for staples like oil, pasta, couscous, huge bags of rice, kidney beans and chopped tomatoes, too.
