anyone have property here and there?
« on: August 09, 2007, 04:03:27 PM »
This has always been our plan.  We've got a flat in the UK and are planning to move back to the US within a couple of years.  IT's a bit frustrating in that we'll have to start at the bottom of the property ladder in the States, especially when we could sell our flat here and have a good amount to put down on something substantial in New York.  But I think it's probably more difficult to buy here with the pound so strong and the cost of property rising faster and faster, so we need to suck it up!  If we sold here, we'd never get back on the ladder.

Anyway, wondered if anyoen's managed to do this successfully?

Hi there

Not yet! ;)

No doubt there's actually LOTS of people who do have property in both the UK and USA and are able to either manage it via a property manaegement company and/or via friends and family.

I'm looking at this exact scenario of buying 'over there in the US' and depending where, either (most likely) get a management company to look after it or, some of my family and their freinds etc.

Overall, not too demanding to manage - just have to be aware of the tax implications ! even that is semi ok as the US and UK have a double taxation treaty so you wont get taxed twice!

I'm probably going to be going for a 2/3 bed townhouse or a 1/2 bed apartment - but I really like the look of this house!

Can't even get a studio for the price this is here!
