If you are involved with short-term students coming to the UK, or you are one yourself, here is a handy flow-chart summary from UKVisas of the different imigration options for these students from 1 September:

Actually, there is a third option for non-visa national student visitors, which includes US nationals.  If you fear you could be refused entry as a student visitor, you can apply for optional student visitor entry clearance at a British Embassy.  This could be useful to do if you have had previous refusals, for example.
