moving to the UK (maybe); need help (definitely)
« on: March 20, 2004, 04:35:54 PM »
Hi -

My company may relocate me to the UK (around Oxford) later this year - I'm currently in Boston, MA.  As far as I know, my company has not relocated anyone overseas.  Because I am actively lobbying for it, it looks like I will have to take a relatively large role in making it happen.  My boss has asked me to gather a little information..... mostly about the costs involved.

Also, I should say I am new to internet forums/chat rooms etc., so I'm not entirely sure how to do this correctly.  But, I'm really interested in any help or advise that I can find, so I'm giving it a try.

Thanks!!!

Hiya and Welcome :)  I'm not sure I can be of much help, but there are many many resources available both on this forum and online.

Have you visited the UK previously?  Also, if the transfer is successful, how long will you be staying?

I wish you the best of luck.  And let us know if we can be of any specific help. :)

Welcome..best of luck with your possible relocation...i have been in the UK for a little over a year now...I have found that working in an office here is very similar to office life in the US...it has helped me to get used to living here by working and this site is great as well...what kind of help did you need? What type of work do you do?  The southeast of england is a great place..lots of beautiful scenery...I'm not too sure about the visas involved with working in the UK but others mite be able to help..take care :)

Thanks for all the replies!  I'll look around on the site for more info.  I'd like to get an idea about typical relocation packages.  In case packages are job-specific, I'm a lawyer.  My boss doesn't want the cost of employing me to be higher if I work in the UK than if I work in the US.....he has specifically asked about housing subsidies.  My impression is that housing (around Oxford) is comparable to or lower in price than Boston (i.e., no housing subsidy).  And, I'm not sure he realizes this, but I think salaries are lower (I'm hoping pay cuts are not routine).  Anyway, that's the type of information I'm looking for.  The move would be for at least 1 year and probably 2-3 years.

I've been to the UK several times, and I really hope this works out.  I think it would be a great place to live!

Alex

Hi Alex I'm currently in Boston as well.  Lived here all my life.  Glad to meet you.  Perhaps you should speak to Big Ed.  He's currently living in the UK and his experience would be invaluable to you.  Look for emails from him on the forum.  But I bet he'll find you here as well.  Best of luck to you.

Hi Alex,

It is hard being an Internet newbie, but as long as you mind your p's and q's you will do fine in any newsgroup.

As far as doing the research, we are in the same boat.  Our family wants so much to move to the UK ourselves.  We loved the Reading/Pangbourne area.

Here is one site I really found useful:

http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1006977149962

It outlines if you need a Visa and the exact qualifications for each type available.
