Book Club
« on: August 19, 2007, 08:15:55 PM »
I am going to pitch an idea, please be gentle...

Would anyone in the Cambridgeshire area be interested in starting a book club?  I guess one wouldn't even need to be from the area, but I am looking to share my interest in reading with others. My idea includes everyone pitching their own ideas for what to read, along with a link to the book being reviewed on a website, and we could branch out in our reading interests and friendships.  Meet ups could be held at curry houses, people willing to host them, or pubs.  I am open to ideas and suggestions and hope that maybe someone would be willing to join in.  Thanks for looking and giving it some thought!

Maybe we could meet halfway?  Different areas?  I don't have a car, but would be willing to take a train/bus to somewhere closer...just to get something going.

I would love to join or start up a book club.  Any one in West London (I am in Isleworth) who is interested?

Well, Meggles, it looks like you and me to start!  Hey, it is a beginning.  Any suggestions for a book?  Something classic or something in the bestseller list?  Fiction or non-fiction?

Anyone can jump in here!  Suggestions are appreciated!

Count me in as well!

I would suggest this book, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.  Below is the review I found.  I will read anything though, whatever is decided, just let me know!

My book club is doing The Tenderness of Wolves this month. I've nearly finished it and it's fantastic!

How's the book group working?  Is it an online thing or is it a meet and discuss kinda thing?

The Historian is a lot of fun, if you're into historical/archival/sci-fi(ish) fiction, which I am  ;) But it can be a bit of a bear if you, well, hate that kinda stuff.

Here's a big ol' book group list from a variety of book groups that meet at one of my all time favorite bookstores, Politics and Prose (D.C.): http://www.politics-prose.com/bookgroups.htm

I've heard good things about Eat, Pray, Love...The NYT's thought it was pretty goodish  :): http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/26/books/review/26egan.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

It's a meet and discuss kinda thing. I started the club about four years ago when I first moved here. We now have 14 members - which I'll admit is a few too many; I think 12 would be ideal. But overall it works well. We take turns choosing the book each month; sometimes you get a dud, but most of the choices are really good.

Best of luck with your club!  :)

I'd be happy to join Meggles and Lissy!  I think I'm finally through my 2 year long reading block, having read three books in 10 days,  and am reading a great book right now, called Deafness by Frances Itani.

I need an excuse to keep reading and go to the next book.  My current goal is to read all my unreads on my book shelf. I've accumulated a few over the last 2 years.

We could have Sat afternoons as a meeting place/point - wherever.  I'm mobile. Where Meggles is, is a great place to meet.

I really like women's fiction, historical fiction - basically anything that is well written with great characters.  Not too crazy about novels of angst though.  I like to be uplifted - reading about other people's pain is not really my thing. (as in most oprah choice books...)

Since I read The Tenderness of Wolves, I've thought a lot about it and have come to the conclusion that I didn't like it as much as I originally thought.  :-\\\\
