The Cake Debate.....
« on: August 21, 2007, 08:45:15 AM »
I am still finding my feet with this whole "living together" stuff that I am going through..  I made a cake for dessert on Sunday night and served up icecream with it.  The other half said:  this would be so much better with cream.

Now I like cream with fresh fruit, but for some reason, people who slather cake with cream gets right on my....mammories. And I had a FIL who insisted on pouring cream on his cheesecake ::)

I can't see how cream would improve the taste of cake and it makes it all SOGGY.... is it me?  Is it just the american roots showing? I never had cream growing up... Do I need a happy pill? :P

my boy does the same thing.  i made a lovely choc zucchinni cake on friday.  he says- yum but would be better with cream.   i'm like maybe ice cream or homemade whipped cream- but just cream?  i agree- it makes it soggy.

now, i do like just plain cream on strawberries.  lovely combo.

ice cream- yes! cream- definitely not!

I also like custard on crumbly things like cobbler and such- I love rhubarb crumble and custard. yum!  But it would be a bit too soggy for cake.

Hurrah!  I am so glad to read that I am not the only one that finds cream on cakes wrong.  To each their own, but I don't think cream needs to go on the lovely cakes, it does make them soggy.  I like cream on my fruit, but simply doesn't go on cake especially cheesecake. I  was over for a cup of tea and she had a lovely cake.  Then she poured cream on her slice, which confused me, as it was lovely and moist just as it was.  Maybe it is American roots showing, but I like them.

You are not alone my friend!

I like cream on fruit and crumbles but not cake or pie. Blech!

I have come to the conclusion, specially after reading the OP, that British people will put cream on any dessert.  They cannot fathom the idea of having a dessert without cream.  Whenever I make anything from angel food cake (which I love even just plain!), to pie to anything really, my husband always says crem would go nicely with with it  ::)

I have been watching the Master Chef shows in UKTV food and if there is ever a dessert made and served without cream the judges, without fail, always say "This needs some cream".  It drives me absolutely up the wall!  Why dilute the taste of a perfectly good dessert with bland cream???

The only Brit I know that doesn't like cream at all, in anything, is my brother in law.

i think it's a sauce thing- i made a perfectly good dinner last night (mini toad in holes) and he was like- this is good- but where's the gravy.

i think b/c british food *can* be bland, they've accustomed themselves to adding copious amounts of sauce (cream, gravy, ketchup, etc)

I was once in a south Indian restaurant in Newcastle and they made a point of telling you what curries were 'dry'. Obviously they were tired of having people order them and wonder where the 'sauce/gravy' was!

I've never seen anyone put cream on cake here with the exception of Christmas pudding which NEEDS cream! My husband and his family pour hot custard on cake. Ive only seen cream put on Christmas pudding and jell-o.

meggles, I was just going to say about the sauces!  It's not just a cream on desserts thing, it's just that they cannot understand eating anything (except cookies maybe) that isn't swimming in some sort of liquid.  Be it cream, gravy, curry sauce, custard, etc.  My husband used to always complain when I made anything for dinner that was dry (for his standards) and didn't have any sort of sauce.  I told him if he wanted it saucy then he'd better make it!  Didn't hear about it again.

Some things are meant to be sauce but others are simply not!  I don't cook bland food, I like my spices so there is no need to pour half a liter of gravy on the damned grilled chicken!  Sorry, I got carried away  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

Don't get me started on custard..........

Glad I am not alone on the cream on cake front!  Other half wouldn't eat it after he saw my sour face.. Called me the Grumpster and insisted on eating a yogurt instead. ;D

A brit who loves cream and gravy...busted!

Cream because i always think that cakes/desserts are too dry without
Gravy because it keeps the food hot and you can't beat (imo) potato croquettes smothered in chicken gravy...bliss!

My husband puts gravy on everything which I don't mind. Bisto is a blessing around our house however he puts brown sauce on top of the gravy! YUCK!

Brown sauce is passable but...when there is no other sauce, my husband puts mayo on whatever it is he wants "saucy".  I don't like mayo much to begin with so I find this disgusting.
