Housewarming Gift, unique to UK for a friend in the states
« on: August 21, 2007, 10:55:22 AM »
My friend has had a difficult time, divorce, stroke, and is in a LDR with someone in India.  She recently found her dream home and is moving in.  She is dear and near to me, but I cannot figure out what to get her for a housewarming present.  It is a lovely Victorian style home, but she does most of the design work herself and redecorating is all her.  I am looking for something that you cannot get in the states, but I could bring back to her when I visit.  I am at a loss.  Anyone have ideas? :-\\\\

I would go with a tea pot.  :)  Something really pretty.  New or antique.

How about local artist's pottery?  My Mother and MIL are forever sending each other things like this and they love it.

Or a tea pot.

Opps, cross post ;D

How about a nice Wedgewood piece?

If it suits her style, Belleek pottery (from Northern Ireland) is lovely stuff.

A website that I haven't ordered from (yet!) but would love to is notonthehighstreet.com. They have some fabulous things, mostly made by independent craftspeople. Polly George's ceramics are a particular favorite of mine.

Yes, ceramics would be great. Do they have Cath Kidson in the US? If not, that's a quick and easy solution, but something more unique would be wonderful. Also, if it's a Victorian house, you might try an art/prints shop that sells wood engraving prints from that era.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

A teapot is a great suggestion! A lovely Victorian-era (or reproduction) one would be perfect. And you could even add a box of good tea and maybe a pretty tea strainer to go with it!

So many good ideas, now I have a direction to go and thank you to all for your thoughts.  I can't believe I didn't think of a teapot on my own.  Maybe I could get her a tea cozy to go with it, although she may wear it as a hat by mistake.  I will let you know, maybe even take a photo of what I find. :D

We brought home a bunch of local artwork for family back in the US. Both of my parents had bought new houses. We found this local shop that does black & white photographs of Edinburgh but then they digitally enhance one of the elements in color (like a flower in front of the castle, a single tree, etc) We bought frames when we got back to the US (cheaper, easier to handle, no worries about glass breaking) The photos were a huge hit and quite original.

Keen idea Beegirl... so artwork and teapots, both very unusual in the states and classy gifts.  Good thing I got this thread going, as I just found out another of my friends has got a house.  Please continue with the ideas, as moving has now become epidemic among my friends, I know, I know, I started it.  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

If she tries wearing the tea cosy as a hat, I definitely want a picture of that!    ;D
