Noodles...
« on: August 21, 2007, 02:33:43 PM »
anyone know where I could find wide egg noodles.  You know, like the kind you would eat with swedish meatballs or beef stroganoff???

I'm having such a hard time explaining to my husband the difference between regular pasta (say, Tagliatelle) and egg noodles!  maybe becuase I don't really know myself!  ::) - is it just that they're wider????

I know what you mean. Egg pasta might do the trick but you don't seem to see that as much here.

I know this probably isn't the answer you were looking for but....have you considered making your own?  Even though I have never made noodles myself, I hear they are not very difficult to make and you don't need a fancy pasta machine either.  This way, you can cut them as wide or narrow as you want!

I've bought egg noodles at Sainsbury's and Lidl.

Yep Lidl. Also, Blue Dragon does a medium egg noodle you can get from Tesco and probably other supermarkets.

I've tried all those. I have to say, there is a brand or style in the US that is different though, because while all those options are good, they just aren't quite the same. My mother buys a Pennsylvania Dutch style noodle that is about two inches long, a 1/2 inch wide and very light and fluffy. They are almost curly! Don't get me wrong, I make do, but if the OP is after the same thing I've searched for, I've yet to find it. I always wanted to try a German deli or something but have yet to find one near me and never thought to when in London.

HA!  ;D As I was walking through Waitrose, not finding egg noodles and contemplating posting on UKY, I thought If I do, someone will probably tell me to make my own!  [smiley=laugh4.gif] [smiley=laugh4.gif] [smiley=laugh4.gif]

I have made pasta in the past actually, and it's turned out very good (I even have the fancy pasta machine! well, really it's jsut a press that clamps on to the side of the table) it's just time consuming...

Our local Tesco has a pitiful selection, but there is a decent Sainsbury's not too far away that I keep forgetting to look in.  I'll try this weekend maybe.  Thanks!

I don't mean it in a bad way or even a scratch nazi way!  I didn't start making my own anything until I moved here and I figured if I wanted something bad enough and it wasn't available here, I'd better make it myself!

I have only found egg noodles in Manchester at a Kosher deli. But I always bring some back from the states with me. Its one of those things I always pack in my suitcase. In a pinch if I am making a noodle pudding, I use Vermicelli from the regalar pasta aisle. I would guess that making it from scratch isn't as good as the packages.

Marks and Spencer does Festine Organic Pasta... They are the closet to egg noodles you are talking about that I have found... 99 pence for 500 gram bag....

I agree. Pappardelle is the closest thing I have found. I think they do an egg version at Sainsbury.

Thanks for the tip!  May I interest you in an egg noodle based meal - with drink accompaniment, althought it might not be just water  ;) - at our new lodgings as a token of gratitude for this invaluable information?  ;)
