I am another big fan of chai!  I have a recipe somewhere for chai that is fantastic!  I don't make it much anymore as the recipe doesn't work right when you cut it down to make smaller batches.

Let me see if I can find it!  My house is in disarray with all the packing I am doing!   :P  But, once I find it, I will definitely give it to you.  I do remember that one of the ingredients is star anise, which adds a nice little kick.  :D

Do you notice a difference in taste from the US Starbucks chai?

I don't think it tastes as nice at all.

Hiya

I'm a little vague/confused on this...

Seeing as I'm Indian, 'Chai' is the 'Hindi' word for 'Tea' and that means it's 'Indian Tea' that I sometimes drink at home. 'Indian Tea' can and does have different spices added to it for that 'flavour' - cinnamon is used and also some blend of spices only my mum could tell you whats in!

The Stuff is lovely -  I don't drink tea from anywhere else!

Now is the 'Chai' that you all referring to a 'pseudo' Indian tea ? I guess if it's in starbucks it's some 'blend' of something and 'marketed' as 'Chai'? or is it just a certain flavour of normal tea ? (earl grey and the like?)

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

The chai everyone is referring to is a lot like you describe, Dennis.  Usually a black tea brewed with various spices (cardamom, cinnamon, clove, etc) and blended with milk.  There isn't a set flavor - each shop/brand has their own style.

Hope that helps! :)

I used to work for Starbucks, so, I know all the little secrets.  Next time you go in, order your chai without water.  This makes it stronger so no need for the double shot (or the extra charge that they sometimes add it for that extra shot).  It is AWESOME this way.  YUM.   This only works for the hot chai, iced comes without the water already.  ;D

LOL, Dennis. This drives my mother insane. She lived in India for years and as far as she's concerned, chai just means tea. The spices and sweetner are optional and vary from region to region and country to country. :)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
