New M-Bag Info
« on: August 25, 2007, 02:45:51 PM »
Having just returned from the post office, I thought I would share this with those of you in the process of moving to the UK.  The new M-bag weight limit is 44 pounds, a decrease of 22 pounds.  Also, the first 11 pounds is $31.85 and each additional pound is $2.85.

These aren't looking like a very good option anymore.  I am looking for alternative ways of shipping, but, I hope that this update helps others out a bit.
I am the architect of my destiny.

Thanks for the update, Dar.

What a bummer. :(

Dang. As it happens, I'm spending my Saturday putting books in boxes. This will definitely affect what stays and what goes  :(

If you turn up a good alternative, do please post about it. My own move is some months away, but I'll bet more than half my stuff (by weight) is books. Since I'm having to pack them up to sort them out anyway, they don't necessarily have to go by the same route as the rest of my stuff.

When I sent mine, there was a weight limit *for the UK* of 44 pounds, although the weight limit for most other countries was 66.

The pricing really stinks, though. As a data point, the stuff I shipped through UPS was about $3.00/pound, including insurance. Of course, it might well have gone up in 9 months... :(

The option I'm using--expensive still--but maybe the best option--are the flat rate boxes.  20 lb weight limit and you can put anything in there not just books.

So mine are filled with books and then other stuff jammed in as well.  The cost is $34 each.  The lady at the post office thought it came out a better deal than M-bags and I went with it.  My brain is too fried to do math these days.
