Hi,

I currently have a 2 inch thick mattress topper made from that memory foam stuff - Tempur I think is a specific brand name for the same product/technology.

I first found it so incredibly comfortable - to the extent the first night I remember not waking up in time as it was so comfy! - I've now gotten used to it and the effect isn't as pronounced, however it's still very comfy.

I'm looking to try and get one of those big 10inch complete memory foam mattresses and I want the pillows as well. I got the topper a few years ago from Costco for around £120 and only place so far i've seen that do these things individually is sellers on Ebay. A local bed shop would do me a mattress on it's own, but the price was significantly higher, only way cheaper was to buy a new bed, which I already have.

I found that theres also a mattress which has normal foam and then a layer of memory effect foam on top, these are cheaper of course than a full memory effect mattress, but comparing to one, I think I still want to get the full memory effect mattress.

Do a little research for what suits you, currently I've only seen 'choice' from sellers on ebay. let us know here if you find something!

Hi Meggles,
I was in Costco (watford) on saturday and I didn't see them. I don't go that often, but recently I have been - my last 'good look' around at each aisle was about 3 weeks ago and I didn't see any then -  i could easily have missed them of course! but generally, no - I haven't seen them.
I might be back there in the next few days for some purchases, so I'll take another look around - if any other UKY is there prior maybe they might see em and report back here!

I think the issue that some people have with the mattress conforming too much to their body is related to the temperature of the room. In my old place the bedroom was generally colder and the mattress had that tendency to conform to the position I was laying in. I actually liked it that way. In my current home the rooms are warmer and that no longer happens.

I have never been too hot on this mattress.

i'm headed to the states next week.  i was thinking of ordering a tempur/memory foam queen (UK king) mattress topper and bringing it back.  any idea how big/heavy these are when folded/rolled up?

Hi Meggles,

Simple answer - Dont bother bringing one back from the US in/as luggage. They're VERY heavy!

The 2inch mattress topper I had for example I remember thinking wow, this 'foam is THIS heavy'?!  it came vacuum packed and sealed so it saves on transport packaging dimensions. it was also folded and rolled up i think... I'd estimate it weighed about 15KG or so when we got it from Costco.
So a mattress is likely to be substantially heavier and a topper that's Queen sized I'd estimate maybe 2-3KG more, so around 18ish KG.

The package itself I remember being about 2.5x1.5 ft and thickness about 3 inches.

Hope that helps!

actually that's not as bad as i thought.  i will be driven to the airport, and picked up, no public transport involved.  i'm allowed 3 bags- up to 50lbs each.  and the price- $118 (including P&P) can't be beat.

can anyone just confirm that a UK king = US queen?

Looks like it is the same width, with a slight difference (2 inches) in legnth:

I've had a memory foam/regular high density foam combination mattress for a few years and love it.  We're buying a new bed either just before or just after I get into the UK, but have had a bit of a problem finding a place that will deliver a memory foam mattress without it costing the moon.  Thanks for the link upthread.  That helps us a lot.

I will never go back to a spring mattress, but I also think there is a huge difference in different brands or even just styles of memory foam.  Some of them are very soft, while others behave more like the firm yet conforming mattresses that Tempur made when they first came out.

Memory foam has helped my back so much.

We keep hearing don't ever get your Tempur mattress wet. But no one will tell us why. Does anyone know?  I know there are waterproof mattress covers you can put on them.  So, the thing I want to know is (I am trying to be discreet about this) how does the mattress itself affect your "intimate" time?  There are questions we have concering this but how do you actually ask a salesperson this sort of thing??

We've had our mattress for a few months and "intimate" time doesn't affect the mattress. I think the only thing you really have to worry about is spilling a drink on the bed. It does make it a bit different at first because it's not springy, but you get used to it.

Personally I've only ever used Tempur matress toppers and loved 'em.  My SIL on the other hand has MS and her and my brother got a Tempur bed and they both hated it so returned it.  I'd recommend making sure they have a money back guarantee for so many days just in case...    ;)

My wife bought one and she had to take it back to the place she purchased it from the smell was unbelieveable, it made the boys really sick, they said it was normal, but it smelt like nail varnish and the room was over come with the smell and it drifted into the rest of the house, the shop said she should have put it out side to air (in the pooring rain) hello, I have to say it lasted the night only due to the fact we could not get it back any quicker.

The sad part is it was really comfy. :( :( ::)
I hope we get better weather with the new year I am getting rained out.

Good luck to everyone with respective visa applications.

could you not keep it until there was a spell of a couple good days, and then air it out?  surely the smell would dissipate?
