UK Wedding Locations?
« on: August 28, 2007, 02:31:03 PM »
not planning on getting married in the UK anytime soon...

but was thinking about home weddings and if they would be possible in the UK.  i've been "told" that you can only get married in "registered" places- certain hotels, churches, etc.

i'm assuming your backyard wouldn't do?

whereas in the US- it's the officiant that makes the wedding legal, right?

you definitely can't get married in your backyard in England and Wales. Approved premises only, and nothing outdoors.

You may be able to in Scotland, they're a lot more liberal on location.

However....Kent weddings are special:  http://www.akentishwedding.co.uk/

You can get married in gazebos outside.

why is this?  is it b/c of the CoE not wanting non-church weddings to grow in popularity?

If you get married by a humanist then they can marry you anywhere you want.  They are the ones that are licensed, the property doesn't need to be.  That was one of the reasons we had a humanist ceremony.

you can get married in more locations outwith registry offices in scotland, but you need to be married in an approved place.  I think it's approved by the council, not sure if they do it for homes and gardens.  The big thing here (imo) is that you can get married in loads of different castles which is pretty cool (what we did).

When my bf ever gets around to proposing  ::) we'll be getting married at the castle in my village. The ceremonies are in the ruins of the old chapel - so, while it's technically indoors, it feels sort of outdoors.

I bet there are wedding venues like this all over the UK. You might just need to do a bit of research!  :)

you wanna get married chary?  see, not that hard to ask, eh?

in all seriousness- i think getting married is a decision you make, not a question that's posed by 1/2 the partnership.  i'm ready.  he's not.  i'll wait.

Ugh. I'm dreading it. I was definitely NOT the little girl who dreamed of her wedding day all her life. I'm hoping to have as no-frills a town hall wedding as I can possibly satisfy my family with.

AND I'll need a Xanax the size of my thumb to manage it.

Absolutely. The current project is the house. I don't think we could even begin to think about a wedding until that's done with.

We're going to set a date as soon as we exchange contracts on the sale/purchase of respective houses. But I have to give plenty of lead time so my elderly parents can book an affordable first-class flight (my dad has serious hip issues; he can't do coach).

Making a series of scary commitments without even having my visas in order or nothin'...brrrr. Why couldn't I have bought domestic?
