My ailing Mom is from Louisiana, and she used to frequently make gumbo, jambalaya, grits, greens, you name it. She was a nurse, so it was totally wholesome. I miss that food. (She also made the best lasagna, either spinach or meat, I've ever had--no restaurant has come close.)

My mom made fried okra for DH once when we were home and now he asks for it every time! :D

My favorite Southern food:  creamed corn!! *drools*

Your husband is a good man! Oooo, creamed corn!

OMG ME TOO! Give me fried okra and black-eyed peas and banana pudding with nilla wafers and fried chicken!!!!

Oh!  Black-eyed peas!  Louisiana style fried chicken!  Banana Pudding!!

Ok, I just ate lunch and now I am starving....

Oh, how I miss black-eyed peas, with a bit of ham to season them. My mom made them every New Year's, along with ham and Christmas leftovers.

I could eat Mexican food (the real stuff, not taco bell quality!) every day and never get sick of it.

My grandma does that every year on New Year's! We all head over to her house and chow down on black-eyed peas. She says it's a southern tradition.

Not to mention her fried chicken, okra and non-southern stuffed green peppers and Italian rice balls. And EVERY guest wanted to take some of her fruit salad (special recipe) home at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Someday, you're the first person who's mentioned black-eyed peas (if cooked right, and it's a Southern tradition). Arent they fantastic?!

In Louisiana, it was red beans and rice on New Year's Eve. The tradition must differ depending on where you are in the south.

The tradition in my family (Chattanooga/Mobile/Hattiesburg) is black-eyed peas and collard greens on New Year's Day.  I'm not a huge fan of greens, but I have picked up the habit of putting ham in everything.  ;D

I make both black eyed peas and red beans and rice here. I've had no problem sourcing ingredients for either. Yum!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yes!! I always have a can in my pantry (though they're not the best canned). Probably my second favorite food, my first being fried okra!!

I've never lived in Mobile, but most of my mother's family did (and some still do!). :)

My father is Cajun and for New Year's it was always:

Black-eyed peas with ham bits
Red Beans and Rice (spicy!)
Fried Okra (for me, I'm an okra addict)
And if my Grandma was there, Fried Chicken
And winter berry cobbler for dessert
I am the architect of my destiny.
