What do you buy at UK Costco's?
« on: August 28, 2007, 05:50:43 PM »
I know there have been lots of topics about Costco here, so sorry if I missed a question like this.

We just got a membership while in the US and would like to go in the near future.  What sorts of things do you usually buy when you go?  IS anything really worth it cost wise?  I know I'll be getting some peanut butter for sure, but anything else I should look out for?  Food stuff would be great as well as other things like Vitamins or ziplock bags, etc.

We go to Costco once a month. We have a large family so certain items are standard every single time we go, such as:

Toilet paper
Papertowels
Bin bags
Ketchup
Worchester sauce
Mozzarella cheese...the mega block

Other things are spur of the moment purchases such as:

Yogurt
The nice pizzas...5 pounds for great ones
Lunch meat...really good quality but pricey so it depends on how poor I'm feeling

We like Costco but choose to go only once a month because those extras I mentioned...and others would negate any savings if we did it more often.

DH just went. It's well over an hour drive for us so we only make it now and then. This time he got:

Skippy
cat litter (much cheaper there)
ketchup
mustard
large frozen shrimp - a bag
frozen scallops - a bag
a pack of 14 chicken breasts
a pack of flank steaks
espresso coffee
some individual servings of hagen daz ice cream (a treat!)
oreos (another treat!)
newmans grape juice
chicken of the sea tuna
a large back of corn chips
pace salsa
olives
marinated artichokes
an italian salami
a two-pack of tropicana orange juice

I think that's it. The meat alone will last us ages so it's worth it for us. I separate it all and freeze it. We also eat a lot of cheese, salami, and olive type meals (usually with quiche) so that's not so much a treat as a normal meal for us!

This is great!  So it's a lot like the US Costco.

So it's cost effective as long as you don't splurge on the spur of the moment stuff. (Yeah, like I will not do that!)

Skippy, frozen scallops, buttermilk pancake mix. We always get other things too, but those are the things I need to get when we go.

And the best thing we always treat ourselves too is the £1.50 slice of hot pizza after all that shopping! mmmmm...

Baking goods - flour, sugar (caster, icing and granulated), mixed fruit, raisins, dried apricots, glace cherries, etc.  I usually get a couple of boxes of brownie or cake mix for times I'm too lazy to bake from scratch or at holiday times when I'm going to be baking a lot

Seasonings

Lazy garlic

Vinegar in 5L jug

Ziploc bags

Vitamins

Toiletries - toothpaste, Glide dental floss, razors, lotion, etc.

Persil washing powder

Canned goods - tinned tomatoes, beans, spagetti hoops/raviolis

Pasta

Giant bag of rice

Coffee

Craft supplies

Skippy

Krusteaz buttermilk pancake mix

Oops, I forgot we also got a case of chopped tomatoes and several jars of passata.

The time before (February) we got soap and toothpaste which we are still working our way thru.

If I had more room, we'd stock up on even more.

We get Palmolive sensitive skin hand soap as well.  Andrew and Aillidh have skin allergies to most handwashes, and this is the only one that really works for them.

Ghiradelli brownie mix and jelly belly's....as well as getting our film developed.  It was the cheapest place to have film developed - or prints made from your digitals.  And you can download from your computer to them before you go over and then they will be ready when you get there at some of the UK costco's (birimingham and few others).  Books, Birkenstock shoes, computer printer, memory for camera, nice egyptian cotton towels and Starbucks coffee beans were also items we got while there.  And the nicest thing was the already roasted chicken to bring home for dinner!

VERY true.  I printed off about 300 photos there last month and burned a CD of them, too, for very little.

Well worth it.

We'll be in a more rural location with more space and really plan to take advantage of Costco.

Ziploc Bags
Scotchbrite sponges
Diet Coke
Beer
Electronics (they have a good return policy)
Cake. Carrot Cake.
Their sheet cakes are great for kids birthday parties
Ketchup
Babywipes
Cornflakes
New York style Hot Dogs

I only live about 10 minutes away from our local Costco, so we are very very lucky! We pop in there all the time. Love it.
