for me this is the same argunment as the butter one on another thread.

i trust the sugar beets more than the scientists (not that i have anything against scientsts per say)

i would rather eat a smaller amount of the real stuff, than oodles of the bad stuff.  also, i don't like the taste of artificial sweetners. they taste metally to me.

Well, sugar is highly refined, so it's not quite the same as the butter argument. Nevertheless, I agree with the principle (says the scientist ;)). Also with the taste. Yuck.

I have really bad reactions to artifical sweeteners...like getting headaches so bad I end up laying in the dark on my bed in the fetal position holding my head hoping my brains don't explode. :P Seriously bad headaches and nausea.

My issue is when someone doesn't tell me something is made with artificial sweeteners. I learned the hard way that at a child's birthday party or any other party when they have cake, I have to ask if it has artificial sweeteners in it, because a lot of people get those cakes thinking it's better for the children since there's no sugar in it. :-\\\\

My mom is convinced it's just because I don't like the taste, so she has made things like cheesecake using Splenda without telling me until I've finished eating a piece. >:( So she can prove how good it tastes. My issue isn't with the taste (well yes it is in a way..because it tastes like crap IMO :P) but please don't poison me just to try to prove some point. >:(

People do that to me with caffeinated drinks. They think I'm just being fussy ... but within 5 minutes, I know. I really feel for you!

I looked for Agave Nectar once before with no luck (at Sainsbury) maybe I'll try Waitrose (I'm boycotting Tesco, so rather irritated to hear that they stock it).
I have seen it at Waitrose as well.   :)  If you have a health food shop near by they may also have it.

Maple syrup is also good to use for those looking to avoid a white sugar rush.

It's relatively cheap in Costco for a big jug.

I am insulin resistant and if I do not cut down on sugar and other carbohydrates, I will end up with diabetes.  I am not grossly overweight, I just have bad diabetes genes in the family.  I think Splenda is a godsend.  Yeah, it is not quite as rich as sugar, but it is pretty close and does not have the funky aftertaste that some sweeteners have.  I am thrilled that they are coming out with more choices that cut down on sugar as the artificial sweeteners are much better for my health.  Now if I could just convince manufacturers to use the better sweeteners in their products instead of just the cheaper ones.

Oh no!  I though Splenda was going to be better than aspartame!!!  Now what do I do?

:(

Vicky

Try the agave nectar, seriously!  It is good, all-natural, and organic.  Can't get much better than that!

I have Diabetes in my family too and this is one of the reasons I love Splenda.  I think it's great, I pour it on cereal, use it in coffee, etc.

We put so many chemicals in our body these days I'm OK with one more.

I'm going to look for the agave nectar though and give it a try.

Oops!  Misunderstood!  I didn't realize you meant soft drinks.  I guess I didn't read very well.  Hmmm, need caffeine so my brain will operate.   :-[

I was thinking about trying that out actually ... can you use it in baking?

Aspartame tends to give me headaches.  For artificial sweeteners, I go with good old saccharin -- if it was good enough for the lab rats, it's good enough for me! :P

I only put it in my coffee in the morning, and once in a long while, I might have a Diet Coke.  That's it.

For cooking or baking, it's always real sugar!

The only Tescos that have agave are the big ones with the 'health' area behind the registers...
I've always found it at Waitrose or Holland & Barrett.

From what I understand about Splenda, it's fine, but again, best used in moderation, and it's simply too new on the market to have done sufficient testing to come to any real conclusions.
