Scotland Get away
« on: August 29, 2007, 07:35:09 PM »
My DH's father is awesome and has told us he will pay for us to have two lovely weeks in Scotland (YAY!!!!!!) for our "honeymoon."

I've been to Scotland a number of times, but, I would love suggestions on where to go that may be a bit off the beaten path.  We both love hiking and rock climbing and would also like to relax a bit.

Where should we go?  What should we do?

 ;D

Or one of the other islands.  You don't get much more off the beaten path than that!

Oh, i've always wanted to stay at a place called the Roman Camp Hotel in Callander -

http://www.romancamphotel.co.uk/tmenu/welcome.asp

Not too sure if you could fill out 2 weeks there, but it's a place to bear in mind for a romantic getaway (and there's plenty of hills around for you to climb!)

A friend of mine is MAD on climbing so i asked her and she just said WEST!  Might be a good idea to plan a tour of the west of scotland (Callander is a good place to start)

How active or adventurous do you want to be?
My parents and I had a fab trip last year - renting a minivan and driving up part of the west coast, over through the Highlands, down the East Coast, over to Skye and into Glasgow.
There's a gorgeous B&B/family home just outside of Glasgow where we stayed with the loveliest family (and cutest dog EVER)... in the most beautiful, pristine surroundings (there's a stream that goes right by their front door), you'd never know a big city was nearby... and right next to the last of the Highland distilleries (Glengoyne).

Overall I'd say anything that involves the Highlands.

The Highlands are really gorgeous (actually, all of Scotland is gorgeous but I was awed by what I saw of the Highlands.)

And if you stop by Inverness at all, I know a great second hand bookshop to check out! (well at least it was there in 2005, hopefully it still is!)

If it's Leakey's on Church St, the large converted Church then it is still there.  I enjoyed a nice hot chocolate and lunch there last weekend.   ;D

haha, oh it was great!  I bought a gorgeous 1875 antique bible in french which was in almost perfect condition....for the princely sum of £16.  There was loads of fantastic antique books there and also the simply secondhand- and even a little cafe up at the top of the shop!  It was lovely.  I'll have to do some digging to find it, I can't remember the name of the place.  But it was pretty much in the city centre.

xposted with hatsumomo- that's it, it was Leakey's! Highly recommended.

In that case, you'll be at the highest mountain in scotland and britain...Ben Nevis...that might challenge your climbing skills but if all else fails there's a lift to the top!

Er, Ben Nevis is on the other side of the country, and there isn't a lift to the top. There's gondolas on the nearby Aonach Mor, though.

Duh!  For Inverness I read Fort William...i recently drove accross country and passed through both places so they've merged into one in my head...not bad for someone who's lived in scotland all her life!  (the lift to the top was my attempt at humour  :))

I stayed with my parents in Onich, just outside Fort William. It was a lovely B&B, and my parents had a beautiful view of the Loch. There were LOADS of people walking and hiking. I remember thinking I had to tell my friend in California about it because she's into that as well and I knew she would love it. The highlands were simply one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.
