Please recommend a good microwave
« on: September 01, 2007, 12:09:05 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good microwave that doesn't have the grill feature? Yesterday our third grill/microwave bit the dust when I was making microwave popcorn. I'm so sick of the crappy appliances here! I've gone through several fridges, microwaves and condenser dryers here! My grandmother had the same microwave for over 20 years! Why can't I just find good appliances here  >:(

We have an LG stainless steel one that has been great so far.

We just got a Panasonic combo grill/microwave which has been great so far.  We had a LG which Rich bought about 7 years ago and worked well until the paint on the bottom started to wear away due to the rotating tray.

My parents have had their microwave for 20 years and it's just now start that it's starting to have problems.  They don't make things the way they used to, that is for sure.

Pebs, I recommend buying the cheapest, simplest (analog) microwave you can get.  This is the one we have:

There was an old one - very similar - left behind by the previous owner of our house, that appeared to have lasted a good long time.  We replaced like for like.  Even if it doesn't last too long, then you're only out £45.

Most people don't really need (and won't use the features of) a microwave with all the latest technological bells & whistles on them, IMO.  We only use ours to reheat food, to steam rice & make porridge - that's it!

We also have an LG - the "intellowave" - I think it was about £50 - and we're very happy with it.

We had a cheapy when I first moved here but it was too small so I gave it to a fellow UKYer. Now I wish I had it back  ;D

All I really use a microwave for is heating food and softening ice cream. I guess small and cheap would be absolutely fine.

Just curious, what else would someone use a microwave for. Do people cook stuff in them??

Sure!They even have microwave cookbooks.
When I was about 16 I used to work at a waterbed shop (ha ha sooooooooooo 80s) and the guy I worked with used to do his Thanksgiving turkey in the microwave.

LOL I remember him perfectly. He was about 42 had blond hair in a mullet and a moustache which made him look like a Village People wannabe. Tan cord suit with bell bottoms. Very disco/Studio 64 looking!  ;D

We got a Sharp at a boot sale for five pounds, we've had it over two years, and it's wonderful.

Cookworks is the one I have and I've had it a year and half with no bother. It was like £25 when I got it. I also paid £4.99 for 3 year coverage on it just in case since most of my other appliances go and this way the'll replace it where I got it no questions asked. I find Cookworks has been good all around.

I've got an Amana Radarange, built in 1989, and love it.  Due to it's age, I'm looking into potential replacements.  Mine is a 1500-watt, and most manufacturers don't seem to make them for home use anymore.  The closest I could find is a Euro Pro 1450-watt microwave.  I'll miss my Amana when it finally goes.

Panasonic are a quite good make.  Sharp aren't too bad either.  Personally, get a cheapish one and see how you get on.  You can get them repaired when they break, but it often isn't worth it.

Ask and ye shall be babbled at.
