My Mom collects cookbooks.  Have you thought of buying her a tex-mex cookbook and some of the items needed to make some of the dishes.

Hoping all those from Texas (or any others!) might be able to help.  I'm not from Texas so having a bit of trouble here. My mom is looking for some small gifts for DH's mum at christmas. MIL has already been to Iowa where I am from so gifts from there are kind of old. My mom is going to TX and thought it would be neat to find some gifts for christmas to bring over.  Any ideas?

I'm in Austin right now.  You might try a Texas-oriented cookbook - there are lots of those available across the state.

Does she garden?  You could get her some seed packets of Texas flowers (bluebonnets, indian paintbrushes) - those go over particularly well.

Another fab idea!  I know when I was in Scotland I found a packet of Scottish wildflower seeds and sent them to my sister.  But I did it on the sneaky as I think customs doesn't really allow that sort of thing.
