I can't wait.  The first film was so damned brilliant... I'm quite excited. :D

Me! Me! Me! Me!  I'm a huuuuuuuuge Tudor history geek, and I tend to go goofy over any film about that period.  Add Cate Blanchett to the mix and it's all I can do to not SQUEE at the top of my lungs. :D

me too! how stoked am I that I virtually live next door to Hampton Court Palace. Can't wait to go visit!

How did I ever miss this thread? I am SO stoked to see this movie!! Dar's coming with me, right? Of course, we could all unite and go to one showing. A big gaggle of Tudor-lovin' UKYers!  ;D

And Clive Owen is so dashing as Sir Walter Raleigh!

I'm with persephone, I also own Elizabeth, and thought Cate did a wonderful job in that one. I think this movie portrays E I in some of her more exciting endeavors, so I'm hoping Cate delivers again. I don't have doubts so far!

And the costuming! *drool*

Oh!  I didn't know it was coming out either.  I liked the first Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett very much.  I'm not into Tudor history per se, but I am into *all* eras where historical costuming is concerned!

Ummm...it depends.  I worked at The PA Renaissance Faire for a summer.  90 plus degrees and heavy skirts / tight bodices don't always make for a comfy day!  :P  But we sure looked good  :D !

Ha ha!  I remember bodice shopping at the Faire and the salesman (he was also the craftsman who made them) described the difference between bras and bodices as:  "Bras lift and separate, bodices lift and squish together."  You can't beat that combo for cleavage, especially if you don't normally have so much!  :)

A bit late in joining but I'm dying to see this.

Did anyone catch The Virgin Queen on UKTV History on Sunday. They were playing it all day. Was pretty good and I learned something new: I had no idea that one of Elizabeth's ladies in waiting had an affair with Robert Dudley and then married him and she was exiled from court. Apparently she looked just like her, too. Freaky.

Anyways, I've been well into my tudor history lately. I read this recent book about Lady Jane Grey which has left me fascinated with the period.

Was it called Innocent Traitor written by Alison Weir?  Lady Jane fascinates me!  ;D  You should see the movie Lady Jane with Patrick Stewart, Helena Bonham Carter, and Cary Elwes.  Great film!  Strays a bit from actual fact but SUCH a great girly film!  Jane was a brilliant girl!  Such a wasted life, really.

The Virigin Queen was quite good!  I saw it stateside on PBS.  Oh Elizabeth and Dudley.  Sometimes, just Dudley.  He did create quite a lot of scandal in his day.  Did you know he wa accused of murdering his first wife after she fell down some stairs?  Many say that he murdered her so he could be with Elizabeth.  When she rejected marrying him, he ran off with the lady in waiting, angered Elizabeth, and she banished him.  She banished him a few times.  Can be a little tough when the women you want a relationship with is a Queen.

Since you are fascinated with the Tudors, let me know if you are interested and I can recommend a few good historical novels and non-fiction stuff.

The Boleyn Inheritance
The Constant Princess
The Virgin's Lover
The Queen's Fool
The Other Boleyn Girl

her tudor books are great historical fiction (in my humble opinion) (although i recently read another of her books- wildacre- which i despised)

It was indeed. Was a really good read.

I've also just bought In the Shadow of Lady Jane by Edward Charles. Not read it yet but looking forward to it.

Her life was so tragic and her sisters weren't all that better. Did you know that Catherine Grey married one of the Seymours but without the queen's permission and they were caught when she fell pregnant and as they couldn't provide documentation to prove their marriage they were thrown into the tower. They stupidly had another child while in the tower and Catherine ended up dying in prison after 7 years.

Such scandal!

I'm a big fan of Alison Weir.  I've got her books on Elizabeth, Henry, The Princes in the Tower and Elinor of Aquitane.  All brilliant, and I'd recommend her Elizabeth above Starkey's.  Not read Innocent Traitor yet, so I'll def keep a look out.

Philippa Gregory's stuff is supposed to be relatively historically accurate, but is a bit chick lit for me.  I'm really looking forward to the film though.
