Ewwww - hard peaches & plums?!  No way!  Steve bought some local plums at the green grocer this week, they are still hard & they are simply awful. :P

I'm not down with hard peaches/plums, but I cannot eat pears unless they're crisp like an apple. When they get too ripe, they get all grainy/granule-y and I can't stand the texture.

As for fruit, usually a good rule to follow is to store it like they do at the store. Like you shouldn't put bananas in the fridge because they go black faster (even though I like them better cold). If you're having a problem with mold... are you storing them in a bag on the counter? or are they in open air in a bowl or something? I know it's probably obvious that keeping them in a bag would encourage mold faster, but not everyone thinks of it sometimes. If your house is damp, maybe the fridge would be better? Perhaps in a drawer with something to absorb moisture like a few paper towels in there? I'm not entirely sure.

I think it's a texture thing.  I'm really picky about texture in foods and that slimy softness of ripe peaches and plums makes me want to yak.  I know it's weird.   :\\\'(

I bought 8 plums for Morrisons last week on friday and theyre the perfect color and ripeness today (dark purple) so they'll be really juicy.  And they've not gone mouldy, yay! Supermarket fruit isnt all bad... I've had them almost a week!

I would always prefer to support local farmers, but theres rarely a farmers market where I live... so its either supermarket fruit, or none at all...

Aw, no need to shed a tear - it's ok to be weird. :)  I love that silky softness & peaches are my favorite - cos you get the fuzzy skin too!

Carolyn, my husband and I have had a couple of lighthearted disputes about the fact that he peels his peaches before he eats them. I've pointed out that most of the nutrients are in the skin, and that no one I know has EVER peeled a peach before eating one. He says that's standard here. Is he full of sh*t, or what?

Yes, he's full of it!  Nobody I know - British or American - peels their peaches for simple eating -- for pies, yes, for just eating, no.  (Though I suppose there's a few other weirdos out there. :P)  Some people I know aren't fond of the fuzzy peach skin so they tend toward nectarines instead, but I prefer peaches.  Nectarines don't have the same sweetness that peaches do, IMO.

A gal I know at work doesn't like eating fruit because it freaks her out that she is eating parts of the plant's reproductive organs. ::)

You've made my otherwise very depressing day better by telling me a coworker was afraid to eat a plant's "reproductive organs." What does she survive on, FFS, if she's already a vegetarian? The same could be said about that.

Yes, she's a vegetarian.  She says the fruit thing is just her weird little phobia -- I am not sure why she doesn't apply the same thinking to vegetables, so... ??  Because she can't bring herself to eat whole fruits, she consumes fruit through juice & smoothies.

Everyone I've met in Japan peels peaches... and my horse used to refuse to eat them unless peeled.  (Canadian horse).  I've gotten into the habit.

My husband won't eat grape skins, which drives me up the wall.  Or unpeeled apples.  He thinks it's weird that I don't like fish skin, so maybe we're even.

I hate the thought of eating something that's fuzzy. I am a proud peach peeler!!!

PPA!  Peach Peelers Anonymous - weirdos! :P

The fuzzy skin is part of the sensual experience of eating a peach! :)

A friend of mine (we're both vegetarians) calls eggs 'chicken abortions'. Kills me.  ;D

But it has nothing to do with peaches.

Peaches remind me of summertime in the BC interior where you could buy fresh peaches and other fruit from roadside stalls, due to fruit orchard after fruit orchard. I used to love the juice running down my chin, with sticky hands....oh, to be a kid again!

I'm hungry now....
