Going somewhere in the UK for Christmas...
« on: September 10, 2007, 09:37:56 PM »
It's looking like we won't be able to find the time or money to go to either my mother's in the US or DH's folks in the Lake District. I'm wondering if it's worth looking into a couple days, including Christmas, somewhere in Devon or Cornwall. Are B&Bs even open over Christmas? Has anyone done anything like this (not necessarily in the south west, just in general)? Would we struggle to find a place to eat if we don't have something booked?

I'm guessing it's not worth the effort but thought I'd throw this out there for thoughts.

TIA!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Have you thought about phoning around in the areas where you think you might be interested in staying?

There will be places, I'm sure, that will offer Christmas lunch/dinner but you may have to book in advance.

My friends do this in Ireland. Every year at they spend Christmas at a B&B or self-catering cottage in the southwest of Ireland. I was at a hotel a few weeks ago and they were touting their Christmas package. I was talking to a guy at the bus stop one day and he was telling me how he was going to book his Christmas somewhere south of here. Start looking around and I think you'll definitely find something.

We've rented a house by the sea on the east coast of Scotland for this Christmas, and will eat our Christmas dinner in the local restaurant -- already booked!

Sounds lovely, take some warm clothes :)

Balmerhon, check out this site for Devon and Cornwall. You can put dates in to check availability. There is a short break search option in the advanced property search section.

I would think you'd definitely need to book in advance for Xmas dinner. It is mostly big hotels that are open for lunch on Xmas day and it's not cheap. By the time you've paid for everything, I think you'll find you're spending as much as it would cost to get to your in-laws in the Lake District!
