Moving to London in July/August
« on: March 25, 2004, 10:29:30 PM »
:D

Hi all...35 yr old single woman heading to London this summer to start work at a local private school on a two-year contract.  I've only visited once and I don't know anyone there so I'm a bit nervous about this adventure I've started.  But at the same time I'm excited about it too.  I'm starting to get ready for my move as I have to store stuff at my dad's starting early May...but won't head to London until the end of July or early August.  Any suggestions?  I know I'll be checking in with sooooo many questions in the near future as things come to the forefront.  Have a good one!

Hi Onetiger,

Just wanted to say welcome to UKY.

Although I don't live in London, and cannot offer any specific advice, I would like to say that you are starting off in the right place here. There are lots of fabulous people who are sooooo helpful when those questions do pop up.

Good luck with everything. :)

Jennifer

Ditto to what Jenninberks said.  I to am hovering upon the point of the great adventure that is the UK as well and have found this site to be invaluable insofar as information and support is concerned.  I think these people are the bee's knees.  Let us know if you have any specific questions or just curiousities.

Welcome to UKY!

I think you will find great info on this site, not to mention people in the London area you could meet up with. I can't speak for myself as I never lived in the London area, but a good friend of mine did a one year teaching contract in Epsom (just outside London) and she found it a bit difficult at first. She didn't know about this site which might have helped her more. I don't want to bore you with her specific problems but she did find it hard to really get to know her co-workers. That said, she ended up having a great adventure!

:)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Thanks all!  I had a freakout moment not so long ago, but after reading a bit more on the site, I felt a bit less stressed.  There's lots to think about with opening a bank account, where to open one in the states, finding a roommate, etc.  But it'll all work out in the end.  And I'm more excited than scared!  Can't wait to make my way to London this summer.

Hello, I am also moving to the UK in July.  I am a social worker and have a job with the Surrey County Council.  Maybe we will meet at some of the UK-Yankee gatherings.  Good Luck with your plans! :)
