Sorry about the onions Aless!  That sounds very disappointing.  >:(

Our dinner turned out FAB.  Everything was good and we made everything on the list.  I can't believe how much food there was.  I have frozen the stew which will be nice in a couple weeks' time when we're too lazy to cook.  I brought in the pumpkin pie (which we didn't even break into!) as we're out of town this weekend so better for the office mates to eat it.  The rhubarb crumble turned out fine, although I think I didn't do the crumble part quite right.  Anyway DH liked it.

I took photos!  Will post next week though... :)

Boo, the link isn't working for me. I'm not sure if it's a problem with epicurious or with me.
It was probably me goofing things up while trying to post in the middle of frantic cooking! Here it is.

Sweet Potato and Yam Galette   Bon Appétit | November 1997

The potatoes and yams are perked up with fresh ginger and with lemons.

Serves 6 to 8.
 ingredients
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter
1/2 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon salt

Nonstick vegetable oil spray
1 1/2 pounds small slender tan-skinned sweet potatoes, peeled, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick rounds
1 1/2 pounds small slender yams (red-skinned sweet potatoes), peeled, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick rounds
1/4 cup all purpose flour

Lemon wedges
 preparation
Melt butter in heavy medium saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar, ginger, lemon peel and salt; stir until sugar dissolves, about 4 minutes. Keep warm.

Position rack in top third of oven and preheat to 400°F. Line 9- to 10-inch-diameter, 13/4-inch-deep ovenproof skillet with foil. Spray foil with nonstick spray. Toss sweet potatoes and yams with flour in large bowl. Add brown sugar mixture; stir to coat potatoes and yams. Arrange sweet potatoes and yams alternately in overlapping circles in prepared skillet. Spoon any remaining brown sugar mixture over potatoes. Press on potatoes to compact. Cover with foil.

Bake potatoes until just tender, about 1 hour. Uncover and press potatoes with metal spatula to compact. Continue baking until potatoes are very tender, pressing on potatoes occasionally, about 30 minutes longer. (Can be made 4 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature. Rewarm in 400°F oven about 30 minutes.) Let stand 10 minutes. Using oven mitts, invert skillet onto platter. Remove skillet. Peel off foil. Replace any pieces of sweet potatoes and yams that may have become dislodged. Cut galette into wedges; serve with lemon wedges.

We had a lovely time last night. No major disasters, despite a large number of near-misses--like putting 10 ounces of butter in the tart crust rather than 10 tablespoons! ::) Fortunately I realized in time, so we now have a disk of tart dough in the freezer for Christmas or whatever. :)

These people don't eat enough, though. Especially dessert! I think I have more dessert than I started with, since somebody brought tiramisu and somebody else brought a lovely box of marzipan fruits from Sicily. (Not that I'm complaining about the latter!) But it seemed to be appreciated by all, and I don't think anyone went home hungry.

One of the PhD students had said he would bring some nibbles, and I commented to my husband that if he brought Pringles I would have to smack him. And what does he show up with, but...two cans of Pringles! [smiley=laugh4.gif] Funniest thing all evening!

Thank you!! I found it on Epicurious and have saved it. I'll definitely be trying this one out!

it is NEVER too early to start thinking about thanksgiving.  i got out my folder last week and have started planning-

turkey- may have to be (3) this year
corn cobbler- bit hit from last year
brussels & bacon- to replace the awful green beans from last year
mash- with milk/garlic
candied yam coins
gravy, gravy and more gravy
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Never too early to think about Thanksgiving! ;D

Depends what you need. I didn't have much trouble finding what I needed last year, but I'd already overhauled Thanksgiving dinner to use mostly fresh ingredients. Canned pumpkin and cranberry sauce are hard to find. I had success last year with making my own pumpkin puree, but I still have a can in the cupboard because I am taking no chances with my pumpkin cheesecake!

cross-posted with meggles, clearly a kindred soul :)

it is if you don't celebrate it, and have to endure months of hearing/reading people going on about it!  ;)

I posted this in Just Do It...

http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=34054.0

I never got around to updating the links, but it's a good start for any novices reading this thread.

I'm hemming and hawing about what to do. It's about 3 weeks before I fly to the US and DH wants me to do the meal as part of a farewell party for us.I suppose it will depend upon how stressed I am about the impending move and how much I am liking or hating the BILs!!

I'm craving a pecan pie but suspect that would not be a big hit here so I need to give the desserts some thought.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

No, you're not.  I think it's fine!  I might celebrate it, or not...but you know, on this forum we're all about all food all the time!  ;D

We won't be there either - will be going home for a visit in November, but coming back before Thanksgiving.  Maybe us East Midlands types who will be around should pool together?
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.
